'Off with his head!' "The Green Knight" - movie review

As a child of everything under the sun involving lions, witches and wardrobe's there is no reason to down play my enthusiasm for David Lowery's THE GREEN KNIGHT. Based off the folklore "SIR GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT" this iconic little lyric has been in the depths of my mind as far back as "Prince Caspian" himself could travel. Yet with that being said it was no reason to have high expectations for a post pandemic film clocking in a little over 2 and a half hours. I expected beauty and I got that. I expected superb acting and it was met on all levels. The only thing I didn't expect was a want for the film to end faster as time went on. THE GREEN KNIGHT will no doubt be talked about as one of the better aesthetic films of the year but the miraculous tale maybe a little too lukewarm to hold onto viewers.

Dev Patel sets the tone as the lively Gawian and I couldn't have been more impressed with his performance. One must wonder how much creativity and improve he was allowed to have within the role. Lowery's direction and writing of the film weren't bad by any means there were just moments that stretched a little too far especially those involving co star Alicia Vikander.

My words shouldn't sway anyone from seeing this magnificent looking film. From the look of the Green Knight himself to the treacherous plains of the quest, all fantasy films of 2021 are put on notice. Casual genre fans will snuggle up to this one at home more than likely and we don't blame them. THE GREEN KNIGHT is long developed and at times a little slow so expected streams to pick up on this one as we start to wind down the summer!
