Universal Pictures and Blumhouse have released a new featurette, Mason Thames on Black Phone 2, giving fans a closer look at the highly anticipated sequel to Scott Derrickson’s 2022 horror phenomenon. The film arrives exclusively in theaters October 17.
Four years after Finn’s harrowing escape from The Grabber, the story picks up with Finn (Mason Thames) and his younger sister Gwen (Madeleine McGraw), still haunted by the scars of the past. But death has not stopped the menace—this time, The Grabber (Ethan Hawke) reaches beyond the grave, targeting Finn and Gwen through visions and the cursed black phone.
Now 17, Finn struggles with life after captivity, while 15-year-old Gwen begins receiving calls in her dreams and terrifying visions of boys stalked at a winter camp called Alpine Lake. As the siblings return to the camp during a raging storm, Gwen uncovers a chilling connection between their family and The Grabber’s legacy—forcing them to face a killer who has only grown stronger in death.
Scott Derrickson, who returns to direct and co-write with longtime collaborator C. Robert Cargill, continues to expand Joe Hill’s original characters. Jason Blum, Derrickson, and Cargill produce, with Ryan Turek, Adam Hendricks, Daniel Bekerman, and Jason Blumenfeld serving as executive producers.
The cast includes returning players Thames, McGraw, and Jeremy Davies as Terrence, alongside new additions Demián Bichir, Arianna Rivas, Miguel Mora, Maev Beaty, and Graham Abbey.
The first Black Phone was a breakout success, grossing more than $160 million worldwide. With Black Phone 2, Derrickson aims to take the mythology further—intertwining grief, family secrets, and supernatural vengeance in one of Blumhouse’s most anticipated releases of the year.
