Animated films will always hold a special place in the heart of FANTASTIC FEST so to see Oskar Lehemaa and Mikk Mägi THE OLD MAN MOVIE as a feature was no surprise. To my surprise was how much I enjoyed the film and stayed increasingly captivated as the grey, sploogie film unveiled itself to me. The dark comedic animated journey was a fulfilling glass of therapeutic homogeny.
It's difficult to explain the overall story of THE OLD MAN MOVIE without mentioning "it's about a lost cow". I will leave it at that because the beauty lies in the weird creatures and characters we come to meet. "ALICE IN WONDERLAND meets HANSEL N GRETEL at the cereal factory" may set the imagery in your head on what to expect. As a person with a low tolerance to lactose I was both enthralled and appalled at the same time! Sorry milk is just gross, yes I said it. Still the grandfather is hilarious and the fact that one key person is missing in the film the entire time is hysterical! There are tons of laughs in THE OLD MAN MOVIE so don't be weary of watching this in front of non horror fans.
THE OLD MAN MOVIE is a great hideaway from the norm. While english over dubs will probably get the film a larger buzz, I still feel it will be very well received. Not too often do we find gems like this which such appeal all over. Hopefully THE OLD MAN MOVIE becomes available to all soon as it's truly a must see of the year!
