'Volcanoes huh?' " The Tomorrow War" - movie review

Updated: Aug 4, 2021

Fourth of July weekend not only brings fireworks, BBQ and beer it also is time to deliver big time action films. Movies like THE PURGE have lived on he holiday in the horror genre for the last few years and while its almost an official holiday must have, sci fi films still hold the title. No film is as synonymous with the 4th as INDEPENDECE DAY. Well we think we have finally found an appropriate successor in Chris McKay's THE TOMORROW WAR.

Chris Pratt leads an all star cast and drops in on a story of a school science teacher , former special forces military leader and war with a time still to come. The fate of humanity is at stake and soldiers from the future need help from possible heroes of the present. THE TOMORROW WAR is graciously entertaining. McKay provides good depth from start to finish while along the side of Pratt are the likes of Yvonne Strahovski, J.K. Simmons, Betty Gilpin, Sam Richardson, Edwin Hodge, Jasmine Mathews, Ryan Kiera Armstrong and Keith Powers.

Classic big scary alien monster elements are all provided and anyone who knows me already understand how much I love monster flicks with hive theory (think bees people). The film clocks in a little longer than expected but once you see the chapter driven outline it all makes sense to give a satisfying ending. Still don't be surprised if you are looking at your phone by the time you wrap this up because as mentioned... it's a little longer than it needed to be.

All that being said THE TOMRROW WAR is a certified "bigtime summer" movie and really the only issue is the lack of theater with it being on Prime. But I suggest you grab a projector set up an area outdoors and the minute the fireworks display is over fire up THE TOMORROW WAR. You won't be disappointed.

4/5
