There was no way we could leave Fantastic Fest without a little anthology love. So when we received the screener for SATANIC HISPANICS we instantly knew it would be a fan favorite. The film does not disappoint with a late night popcorn styled attitude and something for everyone. 5 hilarious and well done stories from some of the best Latin filmmakers in the game. While some features may be more appealing than others (which is the case in most anthology films) SATANIC HISPANICS is solid from start to finish.
A whose who in genre films with the names of Mike Mendez, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Alejandro Brugues, Demian Runga and Eduardo Sanchez. So clearly you are expecting a spectrum of fun and fear and that's exactly what you get. HISPANICS has no qualms with making fun of the hispanic culture and horror which adds tons off appeal to the film. Runga's feature was my favorite of the lot but I really had no issues with any. El Vampire had me on the ground laughing if we are being honest.
As you will see later with our review of VHS/99 later my biggest harp on anthologies can't be undone. There are times when I really want to see just one story out of the bunch and not being able to dig in really hurts my ego. Still it's an agreeable format that will forever have a place in horror films. There is definitely room to grow with SATANIC HISPANICS and here's to the next wave of latin filmmakers willing to take over the mantle.
3.5/5
