I Heart Willie - movie review

I Heart Willie is a brutal, unsettling horror film turning nostalgia into pure nightmare fuel.
Alejandro G. Alegre’s I Heart Willie reimagines a beloved character in one of the most unsettling horror films of the year.

Prepare to see a beloved childhood creature in a way you never imagined. Over the years, we’ve seen twisted reinterpretations of nostalgic icons, but nothing quite prepares you for the torture-porn fever dream that is Alejandro G. Alegre’s I Heart Willie. Who knew a harmless animated mouse could be reimagined as a nightmare straight out of the Guinea Pig series, drenched in unease, cruelty, and relentless violence?

Of all the copyright-free horror reimaginings, this one might be the most outlandish yet—and that’s coming from someone who watched Peter Pan as a heroin dealer. The film follows a young woman who digs too deep into a local legend, uncovering a grotesque nightmare beyond her worst fears. Soon, she and her friends are fighting for survival against a monstrous, torturous entity, one whose murky backstory barely holds together but delivers pure, unrelenting dread.

For those who appreciate slow-burning, methodical violence, I Heart Willie has plenty to offer. But if you’re looking for depth and substance, this one might not hit the mark. The film is fully committed to disturbing and shocking its audience, with practical effects and relentless gore that show just how much fun the FX team had making this bloody, visceral spectacle.

At this point, I don’t know what to expect from these copyright-free horror films, and honestly, that’s the best way to watch them. Taking Steamboat Willie and turning it into a deranged, deformed slasher in the woods might seem like a stretch, but the fact that filmmakers are leaning into these bizarre interpretations shows just how wide the audience for this subgenre really is. While this version of Willie won’t get the same mainstream attention as other adaptations, it’s fascinating to see how the trend is spreading across borders. Maybe next, we’ll get a Cinderella-inspired Hostel film shot in Eastern Europe. Who knows?

One thing’s for sure—Alejandro G. Alegre’s I Heart Willie is one of the most unsettling watches of the year.
