Summer’s Getting Bloody: Alamo Drafthouse Kicks Off Great Bites Creature Feature Series with Jaws, Dangerous Animals, and More
It’s time to crack open a cold one, slip into an inner tube, and pray nothing brushes against your leg—because Alamo Drafthouse’s Great Bites is officially taking a bite out of summer. From Jaws on the Water to an exclusive early look at Dangerous Animals, this isn’t just a season of screenings—it’s a full-throttle homage to killer creature cinema that stretches from the beaches of Martha’s Vineyard to the shores of Lake Travis.

Launching with the granddaddy of ocean terror, Jaws, the Great Bites series marks the 50th anniversary of Steven Spielberg’s seminal shark thriller with a trifecta of unforgettable experiences: interactive Jaws Movie Parties across Drafthouse locations nationwide, the infamous Jaws on the Water events (where real scuba divers might just tickle your toes), and the once-in-a-lifetime Jaws in Concert in Martha’s Vineyard, complete with the Cape Cod Symphony, lobster rolls, and limited-edition merch.
But wait—there’s more blood in the water.
On May 31st, things turn even nastier with the Texas premiere of IFC Films and Shudder’s Dangerous Animals, a vicious new entry into the sharksploitation canon that’s fusing open-water horror with serial killer tension. And in true Austin fashion, it’ll screen while you float—yes, float—on the dark waters of Lake Travis. Director Sean Byrne and star Hassie Harrison (Yellowstone) will be on hand for a live Q&A, with fireworks wrapping the night in proper Texas flair.

From July 1–30, the Great Bites film series continues with a wave of retro nasties like Piranha, The Shallows, Alligator, Deep Blue Sea, and Grizzly—creature classics guaranteed to chew through your boredom like a 20-foot apex predator with a grudge.
Alamo Drafthouse CEO Michael Kustermann said it best:
“Whether you’re floating on the water, sitting in a theater, or standing on the very shores of Amity Island, we’re creating unforgettable experiences for fans all summer long.”
That’s the kind of immersive madness HMU lives for. Grab your fins, get your snacks, and get your tickets now—because once the bell rings and that fin breaches the surface, there’s no going back.
