Armie Hammer Returns to Leading Role in Uwe Boll’s Citizen Vigilante, Now Streaming on Digital Platforms
Armie Hammer is officially back in a leading role with the release of Citizen Vigilante, the latest action thriller from filmmaker Uwe Boll. The film became available across all major TVOD platforms in North America on Friday, June 19, through Quiver Distribution.
The release arrives alongside international controversy after Boll publicly stated that the film was effectively prevented from being released in Germany following disputes surrounding its classification by the country’s FSK ratings board.
Inspired by real events and real criminal cases, Citizen Vigilante centers on Sanders, played by Hammer, a wealthy American businessman living in Zagreb who inherited a massive real estate empire from his late father. Intelligent, isolated, and emotionally scarred, Sanders embarks on a vigilante campaign targeting violent criminals, rapists, and corrupt judges who have evaded meaningful punishment through the legal system.
As his actions gain widespread attention online, Sanders transforms into both a wanted fugitive and an unlikely social media celebrity.
Standing in opposition is Interpol Chief Henry, portrayed by Saw franchise veteran Costas Mandylor, who views Sanders as a dangerous threat whose growing influence could inspire further chaos. The resulting international pursuit becomes the centerpiece of the film’s conflict.
Director Uwe Boll described the project as “an action film inspired by real events, based on real cases and a commentary about injustice.”
The film blends modern vigilante storytelling with themes surrounding justice, media influence, and public frustration with institutional systems.
The controversy surrounding its international release has also fueled broader conversations about artistic freedom, censorship, and how filmmakers approach politically charged subject matter.
Produced by Event Film in association with Borvel Film, Citizen Vigilante continues Boll’s long-running tradition of creating films that tackle provocative topics through action-driven narratives.
Over the course of his career, Boll has directed more than 35 films and produced over 50 projects, working alongside actors such as Jason Statham, Ben Kingsley, J.K. Simmons, Christian Slater, Ray Liotta, Ron Perlman, Michelle Rodriguez, Burt Reynolds, and Dominic Purcell.
His filmography includes titles such as Postal, the Rampage trilogy, Attack on Darfur, Assault on Wall Street, Alone in the Dark, and In the Name of the King.
According to Boll, his filmmaking philosophy centers on using cinema to explore conversations surrounding violence, politics, injustice, and power while embracing evolving technologies and independent production models.
