‘Back to the Past’ Brings Louis Koo and Sammo Hung’s Time-Travel Martial Arts Epic to Digital
Well Go USA Entertainment is bringing Back to the Past, a martial arts adventure combining time travel, historical action and science fiction, to digital platforms on Oct. 13.
Louis Koo (Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, Once Upon a Time in Hong Kong) leads the Hong Kong production alongside Raymond Lam (Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In), Jessica Hester Hsuan (G Storm), Sonija Kwok (Hot Cop in the City) and Lai-Ming Tang (77 Tenants of Prosperity).
Jack Lai (Possession Street) and Yuen Fai Ng (Warriors of the Future) co-direct the film, with Hong Kong action veteran Sammo Hung overseeing the action choreography.
Back to the Past follows Hong Kong officer Hong Siu-lung, who disappeared into the Qin Dynasty after a failed time-travel experiment in 1999. More than two decades later, the inventor behind the project travels into the past carrying modern technology and plans to overthrow the emperor.
The threat forces Hong out of seclusion and back into action as he attempts to protect the emperor, confront a decades-old conflict and prevent history from being rewritten.
The premise combines traditional martial arts action with a science-fiction element that introduces modern weaponry into ancient China, setting up a clash between technology and the fighting techniques of the period.
The film also reunites Koo and Lam following their appearances in Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, while Hung’s involvement behind the action adds another prominent name from Hong Kong martial arts cinema to the project.
Back to the Past received 11 nominations at the 2026 Hong Kong Film Awards, including Best Film, Best Actor for Koo, Best Supporting Actress for Lai-Ming Tang and Best Action Choreography for Hung.
Following its digital release, Well Go USA will bring Back to the Past to Blu-ray and DVD on Nov. 10.
Back to the Past arrives digitally Oct. 13.
