‘Blades of the Guardians: Wind Rises in the Desert’ Hits 4K and Blu-ray Oct. 6
Martial arts director Yuen Woo-ping brings together Wu Jing, Nicholas Tse, Max Zhang and Jet Li for Blades of the Guardians: Wind Rises in the Desert, which is set to make its physical media debut Oct. 6 from Well Go USA Entertainment.
The wuxia adventure is currently available digitally and will arrive on 4K Ultra HD/Blu-ray Combo Pack and DVD. The physical release includes behind-the-scenes materials along with English and Spanish dubs.
Previously released theatrically under the shortened title Blades of the Guardian, the film has been retitled Blades of the Guardians: Wind Rises in the Desert for its digital and physical releases to align with the film’s international title.
The project marks another martial arts feature from Yuen, whose extensive career as an action director and choreographer includes work on Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Matrix, Kill Bill: Vol. 2, Kung Fu Hustle, Fearless, The Grandmaster and multiple entries in the Ip Man franchise.
Blades of the Guardians: Wind Rises in the Desert follows Dao Ma, a ruthless bounty hunter played by Wu Jing, who accepts a job escorting Zhi Shi Lang, one of the empire’s most wanted men, to Chang’an. What begins as a dangerous journey across the desert becomes increasingly treacherous once word of the mission spreads.
With warriors and rival bounty hunters pursuing the group across the unforgiving landscape, Dao Ma’s assignment turns into a prolonged fight for survival built around sword combat, martial arts and large-scale action.
Wu Jing leads the ensemble after appearances in the Wolf Warrior films and Meg 2: The Trench. Nicholas Tse’s credits include Shaolin, The Stool Pigeon and New Police Story, while Max Zhang has appeared in The Grandmaster, Ip Man 3 and Master Z: Ip Man Legacy.
The film also features Jet Li, whose decades-spanning martial arts career includes the Once Upon a Time in China series, Lethal Weapon 4, Hero, Fearless and The Expendables franchise.
The combination gives Yuen a cast with extensive experience across multiple generations of martial arts cinema while placing the action within the sweeping desert landscapes and historical setting traditionally associated with the wuxia genre.
Well Go USA has also released a new trailer for the film accompanying its home entertainment rollout.
