Spite to Make World Premiere at Austin Film Festival

The Austin Film Festival dropped its first wave of programming today, and one title immediately caught our eye: Spite, the new indie ghost horror from filmmaker Carolynn Cecilia. The film will make its world premiere at the festival this October, bringing a retro-styled fever dream of supernatural terror to the big screen.

Spite stars Masha Cima as a social worker who returns to her childhood home after the death of her abusive and estranged mother. What begins as an attempt to reconcile her past quickly devolves into a nightmare when she discovers a malevolent spirit in the house—one that still seems determined to “discipline” her.

The trailer and images hint at Cecilia’s distinctive style, a blend of traditional supernatural scares with a dreamlike edge. Cecilia, a New York–based filmmaker, has carved out a reputation for pushing artistic boundaries, including her acclaimed work on an IG episodic series about David Bowie’s final studio album.

The Austin Film Festival will run October 23–30, with its Writers Conference taking place concurrently October 23–26. Alongside Spite, the festival’s first wave includes the world premieres of romantic comedy You’re Dating a Narcissist, sports comedy Signing Tony Raymond, documentary The Boy From St. Croix, coming-of-age comedy Rhythm Is A Dancer, dramedy Miles Away, road trip comedy Crystal Cross, and more. Texas premieres will feature A24’s Eternity, Amazon-MGM’s Hedda, and Netflix titles Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery and Train Dreams.

Reported first by Variety, this lineup sets the stage for AFF’s 32nd edition to be one of its most eclectic yet.
