Crypt Keeper Returns to Host AMC’s 30th Anniversary FearFest Celebration
AMC Global Media is bringing back one of horror television’s most recognizable faces for the 30th anniversary of FearFest.
The Crypt Keeper, the macabre host of HBO’s cult anthology series Tales From the Crypt, will serve as the official host of this year’s month-long FearFest programming event. John Kassir returns to voice the character, while The Walking Dead director and special effects veteran Greg Nicotero has overseen the creation of an all-new version of the Crypt Keeper puppet.
The new segments will mark the first original Crypt Keeper content in 30 years.
Nicotero recreated the character through KNB EFX, updating the puppet’s movement and appearance while retaining the signature personality and visual identity associated with the original series. He also directed the new FearFest segments in collaboration with AMC Global Media’s Content Room.
“What a great honor and privilege to re-create this iconic character and get a chance to revisit some of his clever quips and puns with John Kassir again reprising his role,” Nicotero said in a statement.
The 30th anniversary edition of FearFest begins October 1 on AMC and AMC+, with BACARDÍ Rum returning as presenting sponsor for a second year. AMC says this year’s event will feature more than 650 hours of horror and genre programming.
The lineup includes marathons and films from the Halloween, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Final Destination and Insidious franchises, alongside a selection of Stephen King adaptations including It, the original IT miniseries, The Shining, Misery and Christine.
AMC is also building the anniversary around a mix of library titles and newer programming.
The network’s latest installment of The Terror, titled The Terror: Devil in Silver, is part of the FearFest lineup. The series stars Dan Stevens as Pepper, a working-class moving man who finds himself wrongfully committed to New Hyde Psychiatric Hospital, where supernatural and human threats begin to overlap.
AMC+ will also debut the supernatural mystery series YAGA on October 23. The series stars Noah Reid as a private investigator looking into the disappearance of a young heir in a coastal town. Carrie-Anne Moss, Hudson Williams and Clark Backo also star.
AMC says themed programming blocks will include “Fear the ’80s,” featuring titles such as Silver Bullet, Christine and Poltergeist, as well as “Creature Feature” programming built around films including Tremors, Lake Placid and Pet Sematary.
The return of the Crypt Keeper also coincides with renewed access to Tales From the Crypt itself.
All seven seasons of the horror anthology are available exclusively on AMC+ and Shudder. The original series became one of the defining horror television properties of the 1990s, pairing standalone morality tales with graphic violence, dark comedy and the Crypt Keeper’s constant stream of death-related puns.
The series also became known for a deep roster of guest stars and filmmakers, with appearances from Brad Pitt, Demi Moore, John Lithgow, Catherine O’Hara, Steve Buscemi and Brooke Shields, among others. Directors over the course of the series included Robert Zemeckis, Tobe Hooper and William Friedkin, while actors including Tom Hanks, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Michael J. Fox also stepped behind the camera.
For AMC, reviving the Crypt Keeper provides a direct link between FearFest’s 30th anniversary and one of the genre’s most enduring television hosts.
“FearFest has long been one of AMC’s most beloved horror traditions, and we couldn’t be happier to resurrect the Crypt Keeper as this year’s master of ‘scary-monies’ as we celebrate 30 years of FearFest,” AMC Global Media chief marketing officer Kim Granito said in a statement.
With Kassir returning to the voice role and Nicotero rebuilding the puppet through practical effects, the anniversary celebration is giving horror fans something beyond another month of familiar programming.
For the first time in three decades, the Crypt Keeper is getting new material.
And for FearFest’s 30th anniversary, AMC is putting him back where he belongs: introducing the nightmares.
