From post-Katrina documentaries to UFO lore—filmmaker Adam Finberg launches into narrative genre filmmaking with a new sci-fi thriller premiering June 28.

Documentary filmmaker Adam Finberg takes a bold leap into narrative storytelling with his debut feature-length sci-fi thriller, Star People. The film will hold its world premiere at Dances With Films on Saturday, June 28th, offering a grounded yet eerie exploration of trauma, memory, and the search for truth in the wake of a UFO sighting.

Starring Kat Cunning (The Deuce, On Swift Horses) as a photographer haunted by a childhood encounter, Star People is inspired by The Phoenix Lights—the largest mass UFO sighting in U.S. history. When she receives a mysterious tip that could confirm her long-buried memories, her search for answers is disrupted by an oppressive heatwave and a series of increasingly dangerous visitors.

The cast also features:

  • McCabe Slye (Destroyer, Fear Street Trilogy)

  • Connor Paolo (The Last Stop in Yuma County, Revenge, Gossip Girl)

  • Eddie Martinez (The Sinner, Night Swim)

  • Bradley Fisher (Westworld)

  • Adriana Aluna Martinez (Duster)

Written, directed, and produced by Finberg, Star People marks a dramatic shift from his previous documentary work—including the acclaimed The Business of Recovery, which exposed the billion-dollar addiction treatment industry and was highlighted on Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and at national policy conferences.

Raised in Phoenix, Arizona, Finberg studied directing at the American Film Institute and built a diverse career in music videos (Armin van Buuren, Malbec, Otis), commercial work (GoDaddy, Napoleon Perdis), and unscripted television across major networks such as Discovery, Showtime, MTV, History, and Oxygen.

With Star People, Finberg channels his nonfiction sensibilities into a grounded sci-fi mystery that blends emotional resonance with speculative intrigue. Expect more festival news and distribution details closer to release.
