Crime thrillers often play cat-and-mouse games that leave audiences on the edge of their seats. However, a weak narrative can kill the momentum before it starts. Carefully crafted execution is needed to ensure the filmmaker captivates the filmgoers with lasting entertainment. This is the task for Felipe Mucci with "Detained," and while it doesn't shake the crime thriller genre's tree, it has enough spunk for a sneaky watch.
In "Detained," we find Rebecca (Abbie Cornish) brought into a rundown police station under the guise of a possible hit-and-run. Things seem out of order as she tries to piece together the story presented by Detective Avery (Laz Alonzo) and Detective Moon (Moon Bloodgood). Something isn't adding up, and Rebecca can sense this. As the story unfolds, it becomes a non-trusting caper where no one is who they seem to be. "Detained" is the kind of thriller that causes the viewer to pick and choose who they believe, which is always fun with a strong cast. There are a few ups and downs that only provide minor hiccups as events play out. While things land on the more predictable side, "Detained" still offers a good diversion from the usual cops-versus-bad-guys narrative.
All in all, "Detained" is your typical "dad thriller" with enough familiar faces to warrant a watch. Its reception will depend on whether the audience can appreciate what Mucci and his team aimed to accomplish.
