Eduardo Casanova is bringing something sharp and unflinching to Fantastic Fest 2025. The Spanish filmmaker behind Pieles and La Piedad returns with his debut series SILENCE, a gothic-laced, three-episode exploration of queerness, illness, and the generational echoes of stigma. This marks the U.S. premiere for the series, and its inclusion in the 20th anniversary lineup is right on brand for a fest that’s never shied away from genre-pushing work.

Set across centuries, SILENCE weaves together the lives of vampire sisters hiding in the shadows of Black Death–era Europe and their modern-day descendants navigating the AIDS crisis in Spain. The hook? Clean human blood is scarce—but social silence is deadlier.

Each episode mixes tragicomedy with body horror, pushing the vampire myth into territory where fear is less about fangs and more about what people refuse to talk about. In Casanova’s world, silence becomes the real infection. The shame of illness, the judgment of love across social lines, and the refusal to see the humanity in the “other” are all on the table.

This new work continues his evolution as a filmmaker who’s never been interested in subtle. Instead, SILENCE speaks loudly in color, form, and metaphor—where vampires are just stand-ins for the people we pretend not to see.
