Exclusive interview with the Heavier Trip team at Fantastic Fest 2024 – talking brotherhood, music, and metal!

At this year’s Fantastic Fest, we had the pleasure of sitting down with the brilliant team behind Heavier Trip, the highly anticipated sequel to the cult hit Heavy Trip (2018). Not only did we enjoy the film, but we also had an engaging conversation with filmmakers Jukka Vidgren, Juuso Laatio, and lead actor Johannes Holopainen. The trio shared insights into the film’s themes of brotherhood, the resilience of bands in the face of adversity, and the unique thrill of making a movie like Heavier Trip.

Johannes Holopainen, who stars as Turo, the frontman of Impaled Rektum, spoke passionately about the bond between band members and how it mirrors real-life friendships. According to Johannes, “Brotherhood is what holds bands together, especially when everything seems to be falling apart. Music is the glue, but it’s the shared experiences—both good and bad—that keep us going.” He shared stories about the challenges that bands face, both on-screen and off, and how Heavier Trip captures the reality of sticking together through the toughest times.

Filmmakers Jukka Vidgren and Juuso Laatio dove into the music-making process for Heavier Trip, a monumental task in itself. The soundtrack is just as central to the movie as the hilarious and heartfelt storylines. “Creating Heavier Trip was about more than just making a sequel. We wanted the music to evolve with the characters. Every riff, every song had to feel like it belonged to Impaled Rektum,” said Jukka. Juuso added, “The music process is a beast on its own. It’s like creating an album while making a film—it takes dedication from everyone involved.”

It was a fantastic conversation filled with laughter, passion, and insights into what goes into making a rock-fueled comedy like Heavier Trip. Whether you’re a metalhead, a fan of the original film, or someone who loves a good laugh, this movie delivers on all fronts.

Be sure to check out Heavier Trip when it hits theaters this November, and don’t miss our exclusive interview with Jukka Vidgren, Juuso Laatio, and Johannes Holopainen, coming soon to Horror Movies Uncut.
