Found Footage: The Making of The Patterson Project Uncovers Bigfoot Horror Behind the Scenes

Mockumentary film where a Bigfoot shoot turns into a real found footage nightmare.
A doomed Bigfoot doc spirals into real horror in Found Footage: The Making of The Patterson Project.

Found footage is still alive—and not just shuffling through the horror genre, but sprinting full speed into new creative territory. With cell phones, affordable cameras, and streaming-ready editing software, the barrier to entry has never been lower—and that means filmmakers are being forced to dig deeper to stand out.

While some are chasing tech, one team has gone nostalgic.

Enter Found Footage: The Making of The Patterson Project—a new mockumentary horror film that pays tribute to the Godmother of the genre, The Blair Witch Project, while carving its own chilling path into the wilderness. And while most fans are already bracing for Blair Witch’s next reboot, they may not yet know about this fresh entry that just wrapped production.

From filmmaker Max Tzannes, co-written with David San Miguel, Found Footage follows the ill-fated production of a Bigfoot documentary—a film-within-a-film that spirals into a terrifying real-life nightmare. Think American Movie meets Blair Witch, through the lens of a French documentary crew chronicling the chaos behind a ragtag shoot gone horribly wrong.

Starring Brennan Keel Cook (The Pale Blue Eye), Chen Tang (Mulan), Erika Vetter (Somebody I Used to Know), and Dean Cameron (Summer School, Straight Outta Compton), the film blends horror, satire, and behind-the-scenes madness into something that feels both fresh and frightening.

Found Footage is a mockumentary horror-comedy about a budding filmmaker’s attempt to make his debut feature—a found footage movie about Bigfoot. Told through the eyes of a visiting French documentary crew, the film captures the chaotic misadventures of a misfit team working on a shoestring budget. But as the shoot wears on, mysterious and sinister events begin to unfold. The crew soon finds themselves in the middle of a real found footage horror story… and the cameras are still rolling.

The Patterson Project goes beyond the screen.

  • Links to filmmaker Chase Bradner’s short films

  • And a hotline for sightings and tips: 1-844-PAT-PROJ

(Fair warning—the person who answers is… strange.)

Produced by Tyler Friesen with Radio Silence—the team behind Scream and Scream VI—the film balances laughs and scares with a tone that feels equally inspired by This Is Spinal Tap, What We Do in the Shadows, and The Blair Witch Project.

Whether you’re a die-hard horror fan or a lover of clever meta-commentary, Found Footage promises a wild, weird, and wickedly fun ride.

It’s exciting to see how found footage is evolving beyond its horror roots, especially with projects like The Making of The Patterson Project. Paying homage to The Blair Witch Project while bringing in new elements shows how flexible this style can be. I’m curious to see how the mockumentary format adds depth and humor—kind of like how unexpected twists make games like Funny Shooter 2 so engaging.
