Francis Ford Coppola joins ‘Brother Verses Brother’ as Executive Producer for SXSW premiere.
Coppola supports Ari & Ethan Gold’s bold musical odyssey ‘Brother Verses Brother’ at SXSW.

The Gold brothers are taking their cinematic journey to another level with Brother Verses Brother, and they’ve got none other than legendary filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola backing their vision. Ahead of the film’s world premiere at SXSW on March 9, the Godfather director has officially joined the project as an Executive Producer, reinforcing the film’s bold and experimental approach inspired by his own concept of Live Cinema.

If you’re not familiar with Live Cinema, it’s an immersive, spontaneous filmmaking technique where scripted storytelling blends with raw, real-life performances. Think Once meets Before Sunrise, but with a free-flowing, music-driven exploration of brotherhood, identity, and the poetic streets of San Francisco.

A Film That Lives and Breathes in the Moment

Helmed by Ari Gold (Adventures of Power, The Song of Sway Lake), Brother Verses Brother follows twin musicians on a winding journey through San Francisco as they search for their dying poet father. Ari stars alongside his real-life brother Ethan Gold, with both playing heightened versions of themselves. The entire cast improvises their roles, blurring the lines between fiction and reality in a way that’s rarely seen on screen.

“When I read Francis Ford Coppola’s book Live Cinema and Its Techniques, one paragraph struck me like a thunderbolt,” says Ari Gold. “I took Coppola’s book as a call to arms and set out to make a ‘live cinema’ musical film—filming in North Beach with my brother, father, and friends playing versions of ourselves, where the invented story and our real lives blur.”

It’s an intimate yet ambitious project, capturing not only the deep complexities of sibling relationships but also the artistic heartbeat of a city that has long been a muse to creatives.

A Soundtrack That Hits Like a Love Letter to San Francisco

Ethan Gold, an acclaimed musician, delivers a score and original songs that bring the film to life. Describing his character as a reflection of himself—an artist unsure of his place in the world—Ethan crafted a collection of stripped-down tracks that mirror the film’s themes of longing, brotherhood, and self-discovery.

“The film’s central song ‘Brothers Keep Goin’ Anyway’ is an ode to brotherhood and recognizing the need to separate from family bonds,” says Ethan. “In between these performances, the score floats through the film like a broken-down echo of the jazz of Beat-era North Beach.”

Featuring additional performances by local jazz legend Lara Louise, Brian Bell of Weezer, and San Francisco’s Poet Laureate Tongo Eisen-Martin, the film’s music is just as much a character as the city itself.

Bringing Live Cinema to SXSW

With Coppola’s stamp of approval and an immersive, real-time narrative that challenges traditional storytelling, Brother Verses Brother is poised to make waves at SXSW. The film is a Grack Films production in association with Atypical Project and is being handled by Visit Films for sales.

As SXSW kicks off, this is one to keep on your radar—especially for those who love films that blur reality, music, and raw human emotion. Brother Verses Brother premieres March 9.
