Halsey and Avan Jogia’s Psycho-Sexual Horror Film ‘Replacer’ Sets September Production as Karl Glusman and Juliette Gariépy Join Cast

Halsey leads Avan Jogia’s Replacer as a troubled DJ caught in a mysterious signal spreading beneath Montreal.

Halsey is heading deeper into genre territory with Replacer, a psycho-sexual horror film that will mark the Grammy-nominated artist’s first lead movie role.

According to Deadline, production on Replacer is scheduled to begin September 16 in Montreal, with Karl Glusman (The Neon Demon, Love) and Juliette Gariépy (Red Rooms) joining the previously announced Halsey and Avan Jogia.

Jogia, whose acting credits include Backrooms and Zombieland: Double Tap, will direct the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Halsey.

Halsey stars as Proxy, a troubled DJ who finds herself stranded in Montreal and becomes involved with an alluring artist and his circle of friends. The group operates an underground radio station, but its broadcasts begin to change after encountering a mysterious signal originating somewhere beneath the city’s subway system.

As the signal begins affecting Proxy and those around her, she must find a way to escape before the sound transforms the group into something increasingly raw, primal and unrecognizable.

The premise places sound at the center of the film’s horror, combining underground music culture with body transformation and psychological deterioration. Montreal’s subway system and underground radio scene will provide the backdrop as Proxy attempts to understand what the mysterious transmission is doing to her and her new companions.

German producer and composer Alex Ridha, better known as Boys Noize, has also joined Replacer and will compose the score.

Ridha previously scored the German hacker thriller Who Am I and Oliver Stone’s Snowden. In 2025, he co-produced the TRON: Ares soundtrack with Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. He has also released seven solo albums.

The project adds another horror credit to Halsey’s growing filmography. The singer-songwriter previously appeared in Ti West’s MaXXXine and Tony Tost’s Americana, but Replacer will give her a substantially larger role both in front of and behind the camera through her involvement in developing the screenplay.

The addition of Gariépy is another notable piece of the film’s genre casting. The Canadian actor starred in Pascal Plante’s psychological thriller Red Rooms, while Glusman’s previous work includes Nicolas Winding Refn’s The Neon Demon and Gaspar Noé’s Love.

Replacer is produced by Kyle Mann of Independent Edge, Isabelle Deluce of Soft Focus Films, Olivier Picard and David Pierrat of Parce Que Films, and Damiano Tucci of Underground Media. The production is being made in association with Doom and Gloom Inc., Anarchists United, Monarch Kaleidoscope, Aska Ventures and Cray LA.

Lily Wachowski is among the film’s executive producers alongside Colin Kelty, Ronnie Rouge, Anthony Li, Lawrence Mattis, Sarah Flores, Emily McCann Lesser, Keshi and Aaron Dadoo, Clay Epstein, Christopher Renteria, Nicolas Jacques-Bouchard, Antoine Chaume, Mathio Pellerin, Hugues Vaillancourt, Daniel Dubuc, Catherine Duguay-Blackburn and Pierre Philippe Côté.

CAA Media Finance and UTA Independent Film Group are representing North American rights, while Film Mode Entertainment is handling international sales.

With production beginning September 16, Replacer brings together Halsey, Jogia, Glusman and Gariépy for a horror story built around underground music, a mysterious transmission and the increasingly disturbing consequences of hearing something that was never meant to be found.
