JACKRABBIT Begins Production: A Twisty, Female-Led Mystery-Comedy-Thriller from Ballard C. Boyd

If your roommate vanished overnight, how far would you go to find them—especially if their new bestie was your worst enemy? That’s the question at the heart of Jackrabbit, the new mystery-comedy-thriller from Emmy and Peabody Award-winning director Ballard C. Boyd (The Late Show with Stephen Colbert), now in production with Hood River Entertainment.

Starring Kuhoo Verma (Plan B, Murder Mystery 2), Taylor Ortega (The Four Seasons), and Soojeong Son (Kaleidoscope), Jackrabbit follows George, an investigative reporter who moves to NYC with her childhood best friend Trish—only for Trish to mysteriously vanish. With no choice but to team up with Trish’s chaotic city bestie, Avery, the women plunge into a comedic, high-stakes search through the heart of New York’s underbelly. What begins as a clash of personalities spirals into something far more dangerous, as layers of secrets unravel and the search for Trish turns into a deeper confrontation with truth, trust, and friendship.

79th & Broadway Entertainment will handle both domestic and international sales for the feature. A first-look image released this week shows Verma and Ortega lost in the NYC chaos, setting the tone for the film’s emotional and comedic intensity.

The ensemble cast also features Saamer Usmani (3 Body Problem, Inventing Anna) and Mark Gessner (NCIS: New Orleans), adding further intrigue to the dynamic storyline.

Jackrabbit is part odd-couple comedy and part twist-filled thriller,” says Boyd. “But at its core, it’s about vulnerability, connection, and what we’re willing to risk for the people we care about—even when they drive us insane.”

Boyd, who has directed over 150 segments for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, brings his sharp timing and human storytelling to the feature. The film is produced by Andrew van den Houten, Clara Peterson, and Ballard C. Boyd, with MJ Bernier co-producing. Executive producers include Alex Cirillo and Dani Faith Leonard.

Hood River Entertainment continues to support daring, original voices, with a slate that includes SXSW hit Darlin’, The Block Island Sound, and A Day to Die starring Bruce Willis and Frank Grillo.

Stay tuned for more on Jackrabbit and its road to release—and maybe keep a closer eye on your roommate. Just in case.
