Jeremy Saulnier’s ‘Slayground’ Trailer Turns a Halloween Massacre Into a Statewide Manhunt

A24 has released the first teaser trailer for Slayground, the latest film from Green Room and Rebel Ridge filmmaker Jeremy Saulnier, ahead of its Jan. 29, 2027 theatrical release.
The film stars Cory Michael Smith as “Metal Mike” Graves, a scare actor who wakes inside a haunted attraction surrounded by the bodies of his co-workers. Mike has no memory of what happened or how everyone around him was killed.
Things get considerably worse when he becomes the target of a statewide manhunt.
With police, SWAT teams and armed personnel closing in, Mike attempts to reconstruct the events of the night and determine what happened inside the attraction. The investigation increasingly points back toward Mike himself, raising questions about what he can’t remember and whether recovering those memories will clear his name or reveal something considerably worse.
The ensemble includes Chase Sui Wonders, Sophie Wilde, James Badge Dale, Stanley Simons, Stephen Root, Chris Sullivan and Young Mazino.
A24 is positioning the film as a “run-like-hell thriller,” with the teaser carrying the tagline, “Halloween is only the beginning.”
The first footage suggests Saulnier is combining several different genre elements for the project. The Halloween setting and haunted attraction provide the imagery of a seasonal slasher, while the expanding police response pushes the story toward an action thriller built around pursuit, survival and a protagonist attempting to stay ahead of heavily armed authorities.
For HMU, that’s where the first look becomes particularly interesting.
Saulnier has repeatedly demonstrated an ability to take relatively straightforward genre premises and build tightly controlled thrillers around escalating violence. Green Room trapped its characters inside a brutal siege, while Rebel Ridge used institutional conflict as the foundation for an increasingly volatile action thriller.
Slayground appears positioned somewhere between those worlds while adding overt horror imagery to the equation.
The teaser moves through a haunted attraction, Halloween imagery, bodies, police officers, soldiers and SWAT teams while maintaining the central mystery surrounding Mike’s missing memories. Rather than presenting the movie solely as a traditional slasher, the footage suggests the initial massacre may be the event that launches a much larger chase.
It’s a promising combination.
A dark Halloween thriller from Saulnier would already be enough to warrant attention, but combining a haunted attraction with a statewide manhunt gives Slayground the potential to operate simultaneously as horror, mystery and action.
There are still significant questions surrounding exactly what happened inside the attraction and how much of the movie will remain rooted in conventional horror once the pursuit begins. A24’s teaser is deliberately withholding those answers.
For now, though, the combination of Saulnier’s filmmaking background, the ensemble cast and the genre mashup shown in the first footage makes Slayground one of the early 2027 horror releases HMU will be watching closely.
You’ve got a haunted attraction in the middle of Halloween, a pile of bodies, police, soldiers and SWAT teams chasing a man who can’t remember what happened.
What more could you want?
Slayground opens in theaters Jan. 29, 2027.
