John Cena & Idris Elba Team Up—and Throw Down—in Explosive Action Comedy Heads of State

While John Cena’s heel turn has left WWE fans shook, he’s still full-throttle on the big screen—and this time, he’s bringing the heat with Idris Elba in the upcoming globe-trotting action-comedy Heads of State. Directed by Ilya Naishuller (Nobody, Hardcore Henry), the film drops on Prime Video July 2, 2025, just in time for summer chaos and fireworks.

The just-released trailer teases a high-octane blend of buddy comedy banter and signature Naishuller mayhem. Think Lethal Weapon meets In the Loop—with global stakes.

In Heads of State, Elba plays UK Prime Minister Sam Clarke, while Cena is U.S. President Will Derringer, a former action movie star turned leader of the free world. The two world leaders are locked in a not-so-friendly, very public rivalry. But when a deadly foreign adversary sets their sights on both, Clarke and Derringer are forced to go on the run and team up to stop a global conspiracy that could collapse the free world—if they don’t kill each other first.

Joining them is Priyanka Chopra Jonas as MI6 agent Noel Bisset, plus a loaded supporting cast including Jack Quaid, Carla Gugino, Stephen Root, Sarah Niles, Richard Coyle, and Paddy Considine.

This marks a reunion for Cena and Elba since The Suicide Squad, but this time they’re allies (maybe)—and the enemy is much bigger than Starro.

Packed with throwback 90s buddy-comedy energy, massive stunt sequences, and the kind of genre-blending chaos only Naishuller can orchestrate, Heads of State is ready to explode into your summer watchlist.
