Cult Filmmaker Calvin Morie McCarthy Channels a Horror Icon with a Supernatural Spin
Breaking Glass Pictures is sharpening its axe for the August 1, 2025 release of The Lizzie Borden Game, the latest genre mashup from cult horror auteur Calvin Morie McCarthy (Conjuring: The Beyond, An Amityville Poltergeist). Known for his eccentric, low-budget thrills, McCarthy levels up with this supernatural horror-thriller packed with occult lore, gothic vibes, and chaotic energy.
The film follows Emily (Airisa Durand), who, after the mysterious death of her parents, accepts an invite to a secluded Friendsgiving at a shadowy castle. But the getaway turns grisly when the group stumbles onto the legend of Lizzie Borden—and decides to play the game that bears her name. One chant too many unleashes Lizzie’s axe-wielding spirit, and the bloodletting begins.
Rounding out the cast are Jason Brooks (Friday the 13th: Vengeance), Laura Wilson, Jessica Noel Thompson, and Chynna Rae Shurts as the infamous Borden herself. As expected with McCarthy, the film serves up gore with a smirk—balancing haunted house chills with razor-edged humor and a fast-paced narrative.
