Neve Campbell Confirms Return as Sidney Prescott in ‘SCREAM 8’

Sidney Prescott isn't finished with Ghostface just yet. Neve Campbell has officially confirmed that she will return for SCREAM 8, continuing her nearly three-decade association with one of horror's most recognizable franchises.

The actress confirmed her involvement during a conversation with the Associated Press on Monday evening, revealing that the eighth installment is among several projects currently in development.

While discussing her upcoming television work, Campbell casually mentioned that SCREAM 8 was also moving forward. When pressed for additional details, she remained characteristically guarded about the franchise's future before confirming with a laugh that she would indeed be appearing in the next film.

The announcement provides the first direct confirmation from Campbell that Sidney Prescott will remain part of the franchise following the commercial success of SCREAM 7, which arrived in theaters earlier this year.

Campbell has portrayed Sidney since Wes Craven's original Scream debuted in 1996, helping establish the character as one of the defining final girls of modern horror. Across the franchise, Sidney has evolved from a teenager targeted by a masked killer into a survivor whose experiences have shaped several generations of Ghostface attacks.

After appearing in the original four films, Campbell returned for 2022's Scream, which introduced a new generation of central characters led by Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega as sisters Sam and Tara Carpenter.

However, Campbell did not participate in 2023's Scream VI, publicly citing a salary dispute and concerns that the offer did not adequately reflect her contributions to the franchise.

The series subsequently underwent significant changes following the sixth installment. Barrera was dismissed from Scream 7 following controversy surrounding her social media posts about the Israel-Hamas war, while Ortega later departed the project.

Those developments ultimately preceded a renewed focus on Sidney Prescott, with Campbell returning to headline SCREAM 7 under the direction of Kevin Williamson, the screenwriter responsible for the original 1996 film.

Released in February 2026, the seventh installment centered on Sidney and her daughter Tatum, portrayed by Isabel May, introducing a new family dynamic to the franchise's ongoing cycle of violence.

The film proved commercially successful, earning approximately $208 million worldwide against a reported $45 million production budget and becoming the highest-grossing installment in the franchise.

That performance helped establish the foundation for another sequel, with Spyglass Media moving forward on SCREAM 8 shortly after the seventh film's theatrical release.

In March, it was reported that sisters Lilla and Nora Zuckerman had been hired to write the screenplay. The pair's involvement marked an early step in development, although specific story details have remained under wraps.

One notable change behind the camera is the expected absence of Williamson from the director's chair.

Despite returning to direct SCREAM 7, Williamson previously indicated that he does not intend to write or direct the eighth installment. Instead, the filmmaker expressed interest in pursuing other film and television projects while remaining connected to the franchise in a less prominent creative capacity.

A director for SCREAM 8 has not yet been announced, and additional casting details, a production schedule, and a theatrical release date remain unconfirmed.

Campbell's return nevertheless provides a significant piece of the sequel's developing identity.

With Sidney now established as a mother and her family having become central to the franchise's latest storyline, the eighth installment has an opportunity to continue exploring how the consequences of Ghostface's violence extend beyond the original survivors.

Whether the next film continues directly from the events of SCREAM 7 or introduces an entirely new threat remains to be seen.

For now, one thing is certain: Sidney Prescott will once again be part of the story when Ghostface returns.

SCREAM 8 is currently in development at Spyglass Media, with Neve Campbell confirmed to reprise her role as Sidney Prescott.
