NLE Choppa Heats Up the Screen and Speakers with Black Heat and New Single “Hard Life”

NLE Choppa stars as King David in Black Heat and drops powerful new single “Hard Life.”

Memphis rap phenom NLE Choppa continues to defy expectations, expanding his creative reach into film with the release of Black Heat, his feature-film debut hitting theaters today. The crime thriller from director Wes Miller (River Runs Red) sees Choppa stepping into the role of King David, a ruthless pimp whose presence channels the gritty energy of Paid in Full or State Property. Alongside his acting turn, Choppa has also dropped “Hard Life,” a moving new single featuring Carey Washington that doubles as the film’s emotional core.

Set against a dramatic piano and soul-soaked production by Paul Koch, “Hard Life” delivers a prayerful message from Choppa to his children. With a melodic, heartfelt flow, he pleads, “Pray to the Lord protect my son while I ride through the night / Keep my daughter aura shining bright like a light.” The track balances vulnerability and strength, with Choppa referencing Tupac and channeling raw emotion through lines about fatherhood, survival, and legacy.

Black Heat follows two desperate parents navigating a perilous underworld to rescue their daughter, entangled in the grip of Choppa’s terrifying King David. Also starring Jason Mitchell (Straight Outta Compton) and DreamDoll, the film weaves themes of family, resilience, and redemption into its gritty urban landscape.

Choppa’s evolution as an artist continues to impress. Earlier this year, he released “Crescent Moon,” a sobering reflection on life in the hood, and “CAN WE LIVE?” with B.O.A. Mook, an anti-gun violence anthem full of unflinching social commentary. He also dropped the high-octane “Dare U” with Imagine Dragons, a genre-blending hit that earned over 23 million streams and praise from Billboard and VIBE, which called him “the people’s champion.”

And let’s not forget PICASSO: SLUFFIN SZN X SLUT SZN, his bold December mixtape showcasing features from Summer Walker, T-Pain, Skilla Baby, and Yung Bleu. With over 9.6 billion global streams and 24 RIAA-certified plaques under his belt, NLE Choppa remains a genre-bending force.

Beyond the booth and the big screen, he’s committed to his community, launching a vegan food truck, pushing literacy programs, and consistently leading with purpose. Whether through activism, fashion, or film, Choppa is reshaping what it means to be a modern hip-hop artist.

Stream “Hard Life” now and catch Black Heat in theaters starting today.
