Noomi Rapace Stars in AI Thriller Hot Spot, Coming to Theaters August 21 from Focus Features
A hypnotic blend of cyberpunk science fiction, neo-noir mystery, and psychological thriller is headed to theaters this summer.
Focus Features has announced that Hot Spot, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Agnieszka Smoczyńska, will open exclusively in theaters on August 21.
Written by Robert Bolesto, the film stars Andrzej Konopka, Noomi Rapace, and Reika Kirishima in a futuristic mystery set in a society governed by sentient artificial intelligence.
Set in the near future, Hot Spot follows a private investigator assigned to solve a murder case that gradually exposes a rebel faction capable of challenging the all-powerful digital regime controlling society. As the investigation deepens, the detective begins to question his own identity, sending his reality into what the filmmakers describe as a “hypnotic meltdown.”
The film is produced by Bogna Szewczyk-Skupień, Klaudia Śmieja-Rostworowska, and Gregory Jankilevitsch, with executive producers Beata Rzeźniczek, Marcin Czernik, Christos V. Konstantakopoulos, Małgorzata Seck, Łukasz Poniński, Marcin Łuczaj, and Jan Naszewski.
Known for her visually striking storytelling in films such as The Lure and Silent Twins, Smoczyńska appears to continue exploring surreal and emotionally charged worlds with Hot Spot. The newly released footage showcases towering futuristic cityscapes, striking neon visuals, and dreamlike imagery that blends noir detective fiction with cyberpunk influences.
Rather than relying on traditional sci-fi action, Hot Spot leans into atmosphere, mystery, and psychological tension, creating a visually ambitious world where questions of identity, technology, and control collide.
With its distinctive visual style and high-concept premise, Hot Spot is shaping up to be one of the more intriguing genre releases flying under the radar this summer.
