Our top 5 films of 2022

It's that time once again to give you guys a run down of our top films of the year. While each one of them stand out in so many unique ways we are sure many have their favorites. Still, PREY, PIGGY, VESPER, HOLY SPIDER and THE INNOCENTS were this year's top choice for genre standouts. Read ahead for a small glimpse of what we thought of each film and check out our year end review podcast for Submissions and Slashers on the link provided below!

PREY -

In my opinion what made PREY stand out in 2022 was the stark reminder that the original formula of the film still works. In the world of prequels, sequels and remakes ideas get shifted and overthought at times. From the start you can tell PREY was a PREDATOR movie and it never let you go. Amber Midthunder was tremendous and as mentioned on the podcast it opens up so much in the Predator universe. Give us more PREDATOR!

PIGGY -

I can't wait for the mainstream to see PIGGY. Lauren Galan's performance was immaculate. Carlota Perada's story gave a gut punching look at bullying and how dire the consequences can be. Spanish features have had a long history of taking everyday topics and stretching the imagination of its darkness. Revenge films will live on like cockroaches in genre films. PIGGY is a fantastic addition. I will always root for a film focusing on the outsiders so hopefully you will get a chance to see it soon.

VESPER -

Over and over you will keep asking yourself why you haven't heard of VESPER. It's breathtaking. The ecosystem of a backdrop will keep you mesmerized as you follow the reverting performance of Raffiella Chapman as VESPER. Once your eyes are detached from the visceral canvas you are immediately drawn into the fairytale styled premise. To see a person so young carry so much weight on their shoulders is why you will fall in love with VESPER. Definitive accompanying co stars like Eddie Marsan make VESPER such a stellar watch. Hopefully there will be a return to this ecosystem and the life of VESPER in the near future.

HOLY SPIDER -

If there was one overall pick for HMU this year it would be HOLY SPIDER. Im still taken back at how graphic and gritty Ali Abbasi film was. Uneasiness sets in the minute you see the interactions of the ladies of the night. Knowing the current problems plaguing that same land doesn't lead to greener pastures upon watching. HOLY SPIDER drags your eye lids over nails Watching vigilante justice that seems more like serial murder than a heroes quest. HOLY SPIDER will disturb you long after the viewing. That is how you know a film is able to hit levels most wouldn't dare. HOLY SPIDER is brave , bold and entertaining all the way through. Make sure to give this one your time and attention.

THE INNOCENTS -

If the above films would have been unanimous #1 THE INNOCENTS would have been a close second. Kids are terrifying. It's scary to have them, to be around them and when they show special abilities you are screwed. This formula has been done in so many ways that the genius of Eskil Vogt lies in the execution of the kids. I was pleased to see there were no adult created story lines that took away from the focal point of the film, the children. Let them lead and that's exactly what Vogt did. Really centering the moving exclusively around the relationships of the kids allowed THE INNOCENTS to shimmer. Even the pace of the film at times felt immature. It wanted to speed up at times but showed moments of tranquility. The performances of this young cast will mesmerize you and the crafty done effects are good enough to beg for more. It's hard to find someone not in love with this film.

So we could go on and on about these films and so many more. Instead of reading it why don't you watch it on the link provided ahead. 2022 was a fantastic year for genre films. Outside of these five here are our honorable mentions of some genre films that didn't make the list but you should still check out.
