SALOUM filmmaker Jean Luc Herbulot returns with "Zero" making it's world premiere at Beyond Fest"


"The lineup for Beyond Fest has just been announced, featuring an exciting slate of premieres. Highlights include epic remakes like "Salem's Lot", along with standout foreign titles such as "Cloud 9" and "Above the Knee". Many of these films are also expected to carry over from our upcoming time at Fantastic Fest in Austin. Here are a few films on our radar at HMU, along with the full announcement of Beyond Fest's programming in case you missed it."




ABOVE THE KNEE World Premiere

Writer/Director: Viljar Bøe

Cast: Freddy Singh, Julie Abrahamsen, Louise Waage Anda, Viggo Solomon

Synopsis: A spine-chilling new thriller from the award-winning team behind festival favourite GOOD BOY. Amir’s life with his beautiful girlfriend looks perfect but in reality, he is harbouring a dark secret he knows no one will understand - ever since he can remember he has felt his left leg doesn’t belong to him. Plagued with visions of a rotting leg that must be amputated, he becomes determined to rid himself of this alien limb, whatever the cost may be.




A MOTHER’S EMBRACE World Premiere

Director: Cristian Ponce

Synopsis: A twisted & original new Brazilian horror from Cristian Ponce. In 1996 a young firefighter and her team are called to help an old people's home that is at risk of flooding during the worst storm to ever hit Rio de Janeiro. As they try their best to evacuate the elderly, the firefighter soon finds that something sinister is lurking beneath the surface, and the residents are not as innocent as they first seemed. Entangled in their web, she must fight through her own traumatic past to escape.





BAAL World Premiere

Writer/Director: Joseph Sims-Dennett

Synopsis: A twisted new tale from Joseph Sims-Dennett (BFI London Film Festival Selected OBSERVANCE). Grace returns to the small town she grew up in to find the brother, David, is missing. Deciding that she must reunite her family, she follows a lead which takes her deep into the wilderness. Lost, injured and alone, soon her only hope is another hiker who is communicating with her via her radio. Grace makes her way closer to this mysterious hiker – however, suspicions start to grow about their true identity. As the darkness becomes ever more menacing and a threatening presence begins to consume Grace, who can she really trust?




THE BLUE DIAMOND West Coast Premiere

Director: Sam Fox

Cast: Desiree Staples, Barbara Crampton, Emily Ashby, Jadon Cal, Ethan Daniel Corbett


Synopsis: After the death of her toxic mother, a cultish 80s apres ski club is the setting of a grieving daughter trying to find closure, but as usual with 80s ski clubs, nothing is as it seems (aliens).



ZERO World Premiere

Synopsis: From the director of the acclaimed TIFF Midnight Madness selected SALOUM, comes a bold, visceral feature film. Two Americans searching for a sense of purpose wake-up in Senegal with bombs strapped to their chest and ten hours to find out why.With their fates in the hands of an ominous voice on the end of a phone, the two strangers complete a series of seemingly random missions, unwillingly terrorizing the city of Dakar in the process. With widespread protest against Western influence growing, the reluctant partners must work together in a mutual race for survival, and ultimately redemption.







DANIELA FOREVER West Coast Premiere

Synopsis: When Nicolas (Henry Golding) is invited to a clinical trial allowing participants to control their dreams, he takes the plunge in hopes of recovering from the tragic loss of his girlfriend, Daniela (Beatrice Grannò). But as his lucid dreams bring Daniela back to him, Nicolas becomes obsessed with the fantasy world that he's created and finds that his dreams aren’t as perfect as they seem.


It's the most wonderful time of the year as with the American Cinematheque we announce the complete program for Beyond Fest 2024. This year marks our biggest slate with 82 features screening across four theaters from September 25 - October 9. Tickets go on sale Friday at 10 AM PST.


A veritable smorgasbord of the best Cinema from across the world, highlights include the World Premiere of Gary Dauberman's SALEM'S LOT, ANORA on 35mm with Sean Baker and Mikey Madison, legendary auteur Kiyoshi Kurosawa brings a 7-film series featuring his new shocker CLOUD, monumental epic THE BRUTALIST in 70mm with Brady Corbet, Marielle Heller’s wonderfully scathing NIGHTBITCH, Ali Abbasi’s cutthroat origin story THE APPRENTICE, the World Premiere of Joe Begos’ full-throttle-acid-nightmare JIMMY AND STIGGS, Steven Soderbergh’s form-defying ghost story PRESENCE, Damien Leone’s outrageously grotesque festive assault TERRIFIER 3, the terror trip to space that is V/H/S BEYOND, the ever-incredible Sarah Paulson joins us for the US Premiere of the suspense thriller, HOLD YOUR BREATH, the newest epic from Beyond Fest superhero Jr NTR, DEVARA: PART 1, a double dose from Spanish provocateur Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia of THE PLATFORM 2 and RICH FLU, and the world-famous Toho Studios takes over the Egyptian Theatre for a day with the International Premiere of MY HERO ACADEMIA: YOU’RE NEXT, and a world-first desaturated double bill of SHIN GODZILLA: ORTHOCHROMATIC and GODZILLA MINUS ONE/MINUS COLOR.
