Sam Raimi Launches $25,000 Horror Filmmaking Award With Decentralized Pictures

Filmmaker Sam Raimi is partnering with nonprofit organization Decentralized Pictures (DCP) to launch the Sam Raimi Horror Award, a new initiative offering emerging horror directors $25,000 to produce an original short film. Announced November 4, 2026, the award also includes mentorship, promotional support and distribution through DCP's upcoming streaming platform, DCP+.

Submissions are now open through December 31, 2026, with applicants invited to present original horror concepts that demonstrate a distinctive creative perspective. The initiative welcomes projects spanning psychological horror, supernatural storytelling, body horror, horror-comedy and other unconventional approaches to the genre.

Raimi, whose filmmaking career includes THE EVIL DEAD franchise, DARKMAN, DRAG ME TO HELL and the recent survival horror film SEND HELP, has long been associated with visually inventive genre filmmaking. The new award aims to provide emerging directors with financial and professional resources to develop their own approaches to horror storytelling.

“This collaboration with Decentralized Pictures to help elevate promising filmmaking talent has been both a professional and personal passion of mine,” Raimi said. “I can’t wait to discover the next standout horror visionary that will have audiences screaming in fright and delight.”

Applicants must submit a short video demonstrating their filmmaking abilities, creative perspective and production capabilities. Eligible materials include previously produced scenes, excerpts from short films, teasers, visual samples or proof-of-concept footage.

Each submission must also include a one-page project description or lookbook outlining the proposed short film, including its synopsis and relevant visual references.

The award carries a $25 submission fee, which DCP says is distributed entirely to community members participating in moderation and peer reviews. Membership on the platform is free, and participants can earn submission-fee compensation by reviewing projects rather than paying to enter directly.

The organization uses a community-driven evaluation process intended to broaden access to filmmaking opportunities and allow participating members to help identify promising projects.

Following the December 31 submission deadline, community reviews will continue for an additional 14 days, placing the anticipated conclusion of that stage in mid-January 2027. Finalists will be announced shortly afterward.

The ultimate recipient will be selected by a panel consisting of Sam Raimi, Roman Coppola, Jed Shepherd, Eduardo Sánchez, Leo Matchett and Emma Raimi.

In addition to the $25,000 production award, the selected filmmaker will receive mentorship, print-and-advertising support and distribution of the completed short film on DCP+, the organization's forthcoming streaming service.

The Sam Raimi Horror Award follows Decentralized Pictures' Sofia Coppola Short Film Award and its recently announced Kevin Smith Casting Award, continuing the nonprofit's efforts to connect independent filmmakers with established industry professionals.

Founded to support emerging creative talent, DCP operates a platform that incorporates community participation into its funding and selection processes. Its award programs are designed to help filmmakers develop projects while gaining access to industry mentorship and distribution opportunities.

For aspiring horror directors, the new initiative provides an opportunity to secure production financing and professional support for an original short film, with Raimi and an industry panel participating in the final selection.

Submissions for the Sam Raimi Horror Award are open through December 31, 2026. Complete eligibility requirements, application materials and official rules are available through the Decentralized Pictures website.
