Sarah Michelle Gellar and Rudy Pankow to Star as the Grim Reaper and the Devil in Supernatural Romance Thud
A new supernatural romance is headed into production, and it is bringing together an unexpected pairing of iconic genre talent.
According to Deadline, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Rudy Pankow have officially signed on to star in Thud, an upcoming feature from filmmaker Mali Elfman.
The film will see Gellar take on the role of the Grim Reaper, while Pankow will portray the Devil in a supernatural love story set against the backdrop of a destination wedding.
Written by Noga Pnueli (Meet Cute), Thud follows the Grim Reaper and the Devil as they unexpectedly cross paths during a three-day wedding celebration where both have arrived with plans to create their own brand of chaos. Their encounter soon evolves into an unlikely romance.
Production is scheduled to take place in Los Angeles with support from a California tax credit.
Mali Elfman returns to the director's chair following her feature debut Next Exit, which premiered at Tribeca and was later released by Magnolia Pictures. Elfman has continued building her genre résumé through projects such as The Scariest Skeleton, part of the animated anthology Dark Corners, and as a producer on films including Before I Wake and Birth/Rebirth.
Sarah Michelle Gellar continues to expand her return to genre projects following appearances in Dexter: Original Sin and a cameo in the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot. She recently reunited with Radio Silence on Ready or Not 2: Here I Come and will also lend her voice to the upcoming animated series Breaking Bear.
Rudy Pankow, best known for Netflix's Outer Banks, recently appeared in Universal's adaptation of Reminders of Him and wrapped production on the modern Western Cowboy. He will next appear in Hulu's comedy Never Change!, which recently premiered at Tribeca.
The production team behind Thud also brings together several notable names from the horror world. Executive producers include Divide/Conquer's Greg Gilreath and Adam Hendricks, along with Radio Silence filmmakers Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.
Additional producers include Derek Bishé and David Grove Churchill Viste, while casting will be overseen by Lisa Zagoria.
With supernatural romance, dark comedy, and a wedding setting serving as the foundation, Thud adds another intriguing genre project to an increasingly busy slate for both Gellar and Elfman.
