Shudder Acquires Nightborn, the New Horror Film From Hatching Director Hanna Bergholm

Shudder is adding another international horror title to its growing lineup.

The streaming service has officially acquired Nightborn, the sophomore feature from Finnish filmmaker Hanna Bergholm, whose acclaimed debut Hatching became one of the standout horror releases of 2022.

The film will stream exclusively on Shudder beginning July 31 across the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

Before arriving on the platform, Nightborn will celebrate its North American Premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival on July 22 after making its world premiere in competition at the Berlinale.

Written by Hanna Bergholm and Ilja Rautsi, Nightborn explores parenthood through the lens of psychological horror and dark fantasy.

The story follows Saga and her British husband Jon, who relocate to an isolated home deep within the forest to begin a new chapter of their lives and start a family.

Their dream quickly unravels after the birth of their son.

Despite reassurance from everyone around her, Saga becomes convinced that something is terribly wrong with her newborn. As tension builds between the couple and their marriage begins to fracture, only Saga appears willing to confront the disturbing truth surrounding their child.

The film stars Seidi Haarla (Compartment No. 6) alongside Rupert Grint (Harry Potter, Servant, Knock at the Cabin), with Pamela Tola, Pirkko Saisio, Rebecca Lacey, and John Thomson rounding out the cast.

Behind the scenes, Nightborn brings together an accomplished effects team.

Animatronics designer Gustav Hoegen, whose credits include Andor, Jurassic World, and multiple Star Wars films, worked alongside two-time Academy Award nominee Conor O’Sullivan, whose makeup effects résumé includes Saving Private Ryan, The Dark Knight, Game of Thrones, and X-Men: First Class.

Bergholm said she is excited for horror audiences to finally experience the film.

“Nightborn is a film made for genre enthusiasts, parents, and anyone who has ever asked themselves: ‘Why do I feel different?’”

Emily Gotto, Senior Vice President of Shudder Acquisitions and Production, praised the project as a worthy follow-up to Hatching.

“Hanna Bergholm’s audacious sophomore follow up to Hatching delivers tension and shocking moments surrounding parenthood and self-discovery, with a touch of humor. We are thrilled to share Nightborn with audiences.”

With Hatching, Bergholm established herself as one of horror’s most exciting new voices by blending unsettling creature effects with deeply personal themes.

Based on its premise and the talent assembled behind the camera, Nightborn looks poised to continue that tradition when it arrives later this summer.

Nightborn premieres at Fantasia on July 22 before streaming exclusively on Shudder beginning July 31.
