Shudder Debuts Trailer for 1,000 Women in Horror, Celebrating Women’s History Month
There is no horror without women. No final girls. No scream queens. No psychological unraveling without the performers who made it believable, and no genre evolution without the creators who reshaped it from behind the camera.
In celebration of Women’s History Month, Shudder has released the first trailer for 1,000 Women in Horror, a new documentary exploring how women pioneers revolutionized horror cinema.
Directed by Donna Davies and based on the book by Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, the film takes a deep dive into how women have transformed the genre since 1895 — as directors, actors, writers, producers, and creative forces whose contributions have left an indelible mark on horror’s evolution.
The documentary features interviews with an impressive roster of contemporary horror talent, including Roxanne Benjamin, Akela Cooper, Mary Harron, Cerise Howard, Kier-La Janisse, Nikyatu Jusu, Roseanne Liang, Annalise Lockhart, Toby Poser, Sara Risher, Gigi Saul Guerrero, Kate Siegel, Jenn Wexler and more, each reflecting on the lasting cultural and creative impact women continue to have across subgenres.
We previously highlighted the project on HMU, noting how it spotlights both trailblazers and modern voices shaping today’s horror landscape. From early silent-era innovators to the genre-bending filmmakers redefining fear in the 21st century, 1,000 Women in Horror positions women not as footnotes in horror history, but as foundational architects.
While conversations about representation can sometimes feel performative, the reality remains straightforward: horror would not exist in its current form without women. The genre’s language — emotionally, visually, thematically — has been forged by their influence for over a century.
1,000 Women in Horror premieres exclusively on Shudder on March 20.
Watch the trailer, let us know your thoughts, and stay tuned for more coverage as Women’s History Month continues.
