Twenty years after it first slithered into theaters and immediately carved out a cult following, James Gunn’s horror-comedy Slither is returning in a big way.
To celebrate the film’s 20th anniversary, Visions Home Video has announced a special lineup of releases for the beloved creature feature, including a limited theatrical re-release, a 4K digital upgrade, and a collector’s Steelbook edition packed with brand-new extras.
For fans of gooey practical effects, outrageous creature chaos, and Gunn’s signature mix of horror and humor, it’s a perfect Friday the 13th treat.
A Cult Classic Returns to Theaters
The anniversary rollout begins with a limited theatrical re-release starting April 10, giving fans the chance to see the film back on the big screen where its grotesque creature effects and chaotic set pieces can truly shine.
Originally released in 2006, Slither follows a quiet small town that becomes ground zero for a terrifying alien parasite. As the infection spreads, residents begin transforming into grotesque hosts for an extraterrestrial organism bent on devouring all life on Earth.
Standing in its way are a small group of survivors led by the town sheriff played by Nathan Fillion and a determined local woman portrayed by Elizabeth Banks, who must find a way to stop the rapidly escalating nightmare.
Newly Restored 4K Presentation
Following the theatrical return, Slither will receive a 4K digital release on May 1, marking the first time the film has been presented in 4K.
The restoration was created from the original 35mm interpositive and approved by writer-director James Gunn alongside director of photography Gregory Middleton. The upgraded presentation will feature Dolby Vision HDR, offering a new level of clarity for the film’s famously slimy creature effects.
The movie also stars Michael Rooker, whose unforgettable performance helped cement the film as a modern cult favorite.
Limited Edition Steelbook for Collectors
Physical media collectors will also have something special to celebrate.
A UK-exclusive 4K Steelbook edition arrives May 18, featuring brand-new artwork by artist Chris Malbon along with a collectible poster.
The release includes a newly graded 4K Dolby Vision transfer along with several new special features that dive into the craft behind the film’s slimy chaos.
Among the announced bonus features:
“We’ve Got Worms” – Interview with cinematographer Gregory Middleton
“Feed the Fear” – Interview with editor John Axelrad
“Just a Bee Sting” – Interview with special make-up effects designer Todd Masters
“What’s Gotten Into You” – Interview with composer Tyler Bates
Additional features are expected to be announced closer to release.
The Steelbook will be available for pre-order through major retailers including HMV, Zavvi, and Amazon.
A Look Back at Gunn’s Horror Roots
Long before becoming the architect of massive comic-book franchises like Guardians of the Galaxy and the upcoming Superman, Slither marked James Gunn’s directorial debut and introduced audiences to his unique brand of genre storytelling.
The film blends grotesque body horror, outrageous comedy, and practical effects in a way that still feels fresh nearly two decades later.
For horror fans, it’s a reminder that even the biggest filmmakers sometimes start with something messy, weird, and gloriously disgusting.
And in the case of Slither, that’s exactly why it still works.
