In the real world, Tehran is about 6,100 miles from Winnipeg, Canada. However, in Matthew Rankin's kaleidoscopic vision, it's just a simple bus ride from Iran's capital to Quebec. Along the way, you might even stumble upon some money buried beneath the ice. Luckily, you're not a diplomat, as the consequences in the offbeat film "Universal Language" are anyone's guess.

In a mysterious and surreal interzone somewhere between Tehran and Winnipeg, the lives of various characters intertwine in surprising and enigmatic ways. Schoolgirls Negin and Nazgol discover a sum of money frozen in winter ice and attempt to claim it. Meanwhile, Massoud leads a group of increasingly bewildered tourists through Winnipeg's monuments and historic sites. Matthew quits his dead-end job in a Québecois government office and embarks on a cryptic journey to visit his mother. Space, time, and identities blur, overlap, and echo in this surreal comedy of misdirection.
