Universal Sets October 17 Release Date for the Return of The Grabber
One of the titles we will be covering at Fantastic Fest 2025 is The Black Phone 2, the follow-up to the 2022 film that introduced audiences to The Grabber. Universal Pictures released a new green-band trailer today, timed to coincide with the theatrical debut of The Conjuring: Last Rites.
The trailer offers additional footage compared to the first teaser, including a closer look at the cabin and surrounding area tied to the story. With the world premiere set to take place at Fantastic Fest in less than two weeks, anticipation is building for what looks to be a colder, more layered chapter in this series.
The Story
The Black Phone 2 is set four years after the original. Finn (played by Mason Thames) is now 17 and struggling to move forward after surviving his abduction. His younger sister Gwen (played by Madeleine McGraw) begins having vivid dreams that feature calls from the black phone and visions of three boys being followed at a remote winter camp called Alpine Lake.
The Grabber, played again by Ethan Hawke, has returned in a new form. Gwen is now the target. Together, she and Finn travel to the camp, where they discover that their connection to The Grabber may run deeper than they believed.
Direction and Cast
Returning director Scott Derrickson co-wrote the film with C. Robert Cargill, based on characters created by Joe Hill. The film is produced by Jason Blum, Derrickson, and Cargill, with Joe Hill, Adam Hendricks, and Ryan Turek serving as executive producers.
The cast includes:
Demián Bichir as the camp supervisor
Arianna Rivas as his niece
Miguel Mora as the brother of one of The Grabber’s past victims
Jeremy Davies returns as Finn and Gwen’s father
Additional cast: Maev Beaty, Graham Abbey
What the Trailer Shows
The green-band trailer keeps most of the same structure as the initial teaser but adds context to the setting. The footage introduces more from Alpine Lake and the snowy environment, giving the sequel a colder and more isolated tone. The trailer also hints at Gwen’s expanding connection to the black phone and a personal history with The Grabber that may be uncovered.
