The Descent: Part 2 Crawls Onto 4K UHD in the U.S. for the First Time This August
One of the most divisive entries in modern horror is finally making its way to 4K in the United States.
Lionsgate Limited has announced that The Descent: Part 2 will receive its first-ever U.S. 4K UHD release on August 11 as part of a collector-focused Steelbook edition that includes 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and Digital formats.
Directed by Jon Harris, the 2009 sequel picks up immediately after the events of Neil Marshall’s acclaimed creature feature, bringing Shauna MacDonald back as Sarah Carter for another terrifying journey into the darkness.
The film follows Sarah as she emerges from the Appalachian cave system bloodied, traumatized, and unable to communicate after the horrific events of the first film. When local authorities remain skeptical of her story, she is forced to accompany a rescue team back into the cave network to search for the missing women who never returned.
As Sarah’s fractured memories begin to resurface, the team discovers they are not alone beneath the earth. Hidden within the darkness lurks a deadly tribe of flesh-hungry crawlers, and this time the creatures may be even more feral and dangerous than before.
The release marks the first opportunity for U.S. fans to experience the sequel in 4K Ultra HD and arrives packaged in a collectible Steelbook featuring new artwork by Matt Ryan Robin.
Joining MacDonald in the cast are Natalie Mendoza, Douglas Hodge, Krysten Cummings, Gavan O’Herlihy, Josh Dallas, and Anna Skellern. The screenplay was written by James McCarthy, J Blakeson, and James Watkins, with Christian Colson and Ivana Mackinnon producing.
In addition to the new 4K presentation, Lionsgate is loading the release with both new and legacy bonus content.
A newly produced Lionsgate Limited exclusive featurette titled Flashback on The Descent: Part 2 featuring Shauna MacDonald headlines the extras package.
Fans will also find an audio commentary with director Jon Harris alongside cast members Shauna MacDonald, Krysten Cummings, and Anna Skellern, as well as the feature-length making-of documentary The Making of The Descent: Part 2: Deeper & Darker.
Additional bonus features include The Genesis, deleted scenes with optional commentary, EPK interviews and behind-the-scenes footage, production design and storyboard galleries, domestic and international trailers, and a second retrospective featurette with Krysten Cummings.
While The Descent remains one of the most celebrated horror films of the 2000s, The Descent: Part 2 has developed its own loyal following over the years thanks to its claustrophobic atmosphere, relentless creature attacks, and willingness to continue Sarah’s story beyond the original film’s devastating conclusion.
For collectors and fans of underground horror alike, August 11 offers a chance to revisit the caves in their sharpest and most terrifying presentation yet when The Descent: Part 2 arrives on 4K UHD Steelbook for the first time in the United States.
