Oddity
In the realm of horror films, 2024 has brought us an array of spine-chilling masterpieces that are bound to keep you on the edge of your seat. From dark comedies to the return of monster movies, yoga kills, and psychological thrillers, the start of 2024 has something for every horror enthusiast. Let's delve into the top 10 horror films of 2024 so far, in no particular order:
1. Humane
Caitlin Cronenberg's dark comedy debut is a conversation we must have in today's society. Great performances by everyone involved made this an early standout of the year. Enrico Colantoni stole the film as Bob, the leader of the collection agency. The scariest part of *Humane* is how close to reality the film walks the line.
2. Sting
Spider movies made a comeback this year with two huge releases. One of them was Kiah Roache-Turner's *Sting*, which involved an alien spider and a fantastic performance from Alyla Browne. *Sting* helped usher in a big start of the year for monster flicks and creature features.
3. Mind Body Spirit
If you are looking for yoga horror, look no further than *Mind Body Spirit*. The Alex Henes and Matthew Merenda horror film showcases a young woman reconnecting with her dead grandmother through yoga. While purists may call out things they see, there is no denying the performance by Sarah J. Bartholomew. *Mind Body Spirit* has some of the best atmospheres you will see in any film this year.
4. In A Violent Nature
*In A Violent Nature* may go down as the most disappointing feature of 2024 so far, but that was based on lofty expectations. Still, there is no denying the impact this film has had on the genre. Audiences loved the first-person view of Johnny the killer, as it made them feel more connected to the film. Goriest horror film of all time? Not by a landslide, but current cult status? Definitely.
5. New Life
A film that may not be on everyone's radar yet is John Rosman's *New Life*. Two uncanny performances by Sonya Walger and Hayley Erin set the tone for this virus thriller. Contagion horrors have always been fan favorites, but *New Life* touched on so much more. With a gripping ending, it won't be a film you forget anytime soon.
6. Arcadian
Nicolas Cage and his two sons, played by the impressive Jaeden Martell and Maxwell Jenkins, take on fierce creatures of the night. Monster movies made a huge comeback this year, and of course, Cage is at the forefront. A solid storyline about survival, being a father, and coming of age in an unknown world.
7. Abigail
Possibly the most entertaining film of 2024 so far goes to *Abigail*. The hope was that the film from Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett wouldn't take itself too seriously, and that's what we got. Non-stop humor and action from one of the more refreshing films of 2024. There's a common sentiment that films are becoming too far-fetched. *Abigail* did not do that by any means. Another cool factor is that *Abigail* is also on the fringe of a horror family movie, so don't be surprised if you walk in on someone watching *Abigail* around the Halloween season.
8. Exhuma
*Exhuma* started off as a festival gem and quickly gained steam after its Well Go USA release. The process of excavating is brought to life with this supernatural tale. Jang Jae-hyun shows us that rituals require precise locations and decisions, or it could be fatal for all those involved. Choi Min-Shik and Hong Seo-jun take *Exhuma* to another level with their candid performances. A must-see mystery horror for the entire year.
9. Late Night With The Devil
*Late Night With The Devil* brought the horror world together early in the year to discuss everything from the performance of David Dastmalchian to the use of AI for set design. Still, it lived up to the hype and even made a blip on the mainstream radar as an instant hit. People will have an eye on Cameron and Colin Cairnes' future projects as the sky's the limit, no matter what genre they invade.
10. Oddity
While there is a film next week claiming to be the scariest of the decade, possibly the most terrifying of 2024 belongs to Damian Mc Carthy's *Oddity*. Quickly joining a handful of best-of-the-year lists already, this wooden fright will be another film that does well once it hits the home market. When it comes to sheer terror and horror outside of *In A Violent Nature*, *Oddity* is hands down the most horror of all these 10 horror films.
