Lionsgate is bringing a different kind of threat into the home-invasion formula with Turning Point, a new horror thriller starring DJ Qualls that is now available on Digital and On Demand.

Released August 25, Turning Point begins with a seemingly straightforward heist before its characters discover that getting into the house was considerably easier than getting back out.

The film follows Margot and her partner in crime after they become trapped inside a home with a man undergoing a disturbing transformation. With their intended target becoming increasingly dangerous, the pair must find a way out before they become his first victims. Their potential lifeline comes from an unusual neighbor who happens to possess extensive knowledge of the undead, while signs that some humanity may remain inside their pursuer further complicate their situation.

The cast includes Jillian Lee Garner, Mike Apple, Shane Brady (Synchronic, Doctor Sleep), Lydia Hearst (Z Nation, Slayers), Sanchita Malik and Qualls as Casper.

Qualls, whose credits stretch from Road Trip and Hustle & Flow to The Man in the High Castle, enters familiar genre territory here, while Hearst brings her own previous experience with zombie material following her work on Z Nation.

The newly released trailer establishes Turning Point as a combination of home-invasion thriller and zombie horror, beginning with criminals entering a residence before shifting the danger toward what is already waiting inside. Qualls’ Casper also appears to bring a more contemporary angle to the familiar zombie expert character, including his presence behind a microphone as the situation develops.

Rather than presenting a large-scale outbreak, the setup keeps the threat confined primarily to a house and the people attempting to survive inside it. The film’s central transformation also gives the story an opportunity to explore the period between human and undead rather than beginning after that process has already been completed.

The trailer offers an early look at the practical dangers facing the characters, the transformation at the center of the story and the mixture of horror and personality Qualls brings to Casper without revealing where the confrontation ultimately leads.

Turning Point is available now on Digital and On Demand from Lionsgate.
