‘V/H/S/MIXTAPE’ Trailer Turns Music and Sound Into Nightmare Fuel Ahead of Shudder Premiere
The V/H/S franchise is turning up the volume for its next installment.
V/H/S/MIXTAPE will begin streaming exclusively on Shudder on Friday, Oct. 9, bringing together a new group of filmmakers for an anthology built around music, rhythm and sound as engines of horror.
The film features segments directed by Ernest Dickerson, Flying Lotus, Tobias Forge, David Moreau, RZA and Renee Zhan, with GWAR appearing in the wraparound material and work from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop featured in one of the anthology’s stories.
Rather than simply using music as background, V/H/S/MIXTAPE centers its horror around the ways sound can manipulate, haunt, possess and destroy.
Zhan directs “Dance, Dance, Dance, Dance,” which follows a studio attempting to reboot a long-canceled puppet show with a mysterious history. The segment includes work from Jim Henson’s Creature Shop.
Moreau directs “Heartbeat,” centered on a pair of YouTube urban-exploration influencers who become trapped inside a decommissioned military facility once used for sonic experimentation.
Dickerson’s “The Music of Mr. Sze” follows a college film student whose documentary project draws her into the isolated life of a tormented musician.
RZA directs “Death Tone,” in which a young sound engineer follows instructions left behind by her late father as she attempts to create what is described as the ultimate track.
The anthology is tied together by GWAR, who host the wraparound segments in the form of an MTV-style broadcast from hell. The film also includes music videos directed by Tobias Forge and Flying Lotus.
That structure gives V/H/S/MIXTAPE a different thematic identity from previous entries while keeping the franchise’s found-footage foundation intact. The new installment is positioned as a collection of stories where audio itself becomes part of the threat, with the film moving between cosmic horror, psychological suspense, splatter and practical-effects-driven genre filmmaking.
The creative lineup is also one of the film’s biggest draws.
Dickerson brings decades of filmmaking experience across horror, crime and television, while RZA’s involvement continues his long-running relationship with martial arts, genre cinema and music. Moreau and Zhan each bring their own visual approaches, while Forge and Flying Lotus expand the project into the music-video space.
The film is produced by Josh Goldbloom, Steven Schneider, Roy Lee, Michael Schreiber and Brad Miska.
