‘Vampire Carnival’ Trailer Draws Jason Isaacs and Nell Verlaque Into a World That Feeds on Despair
A mysterious traveling carnival offers something more dangerous than the usual collection of rides and attractions in the official trailer for Vampire Carnival, arriving in theaters Oct. 7.
Directed by David Charbonier and Justin Douglas Powell, the supernatural horror film stars Nell Verlaque (Thanksgiving) and Jason Isaacs (The White Lotus) in a story that puts a different spin on traditional vampire mythology.
Vampire Carnival follows a grieving young woman whose life is disrupted when a traveling carnival suddenly appears in her small town. Drawn to its spectacle and the possibility of escaping her circumstances, she discovers that the carnival is connected to a hidden supernatural world.
The vampires inhabiting that world do not survive by drinking blood. Instead, they feed on human despair, turning grief, trauma and emotional vulnerability into the foundation for the film’s supernatural threat.
As the young woman becomes increasingly trapped within the carnival’s illusions, escaping requires her to confront the trauma she has been attempting to leave behind. Failure could leave her permanently tied to the carnival and the creatures operating within it.
The concept gives Vampire Carnival an opportunity to approach familiar vampire mythology from a psychological direction, replacing the traditional hunger for blood with creatures attracted to emotional suffering. The traveling carnival setting adds another layer to that premise, using its promise of spectacle and escape as the gateway into the film’s darker world.
Verlaque leads an ensemble that also includes Isaacs, Paulina Chávez (Landman), Kieron Moore (Boots), Eoin Macken (Resident Evil: The Final Chapter), Alicia Sanz (El Cid) and Cedrick Cooper (Boots).
Jason Filardi and Peter Filardi wrote the screenplay, with Charbonier and Powell directing.
The official trailer offers the first extended look at the carnival, its supernatural inhabitants and the increasingly dangerous world awaiting those drawn inside.
Vampire Carnival opens in theaters Oct. 7.
