Welcome to Derry Episode 5 Recap: Neibolt Street Finally Unleashes the Lore

Kids walking into the Neibolt Street tunnels in Welcome to Derry Episode 5.
Neibolt Street becomes the turning point as Derry’s buried horrors rise to the surface in Episode 5.

RECAP & REACTION: Welcome to Derry Episode 5 – “Neibolt Street”

Welcome to Derry finally leans into the mythology fans have been waiting for, and Episode 5, “Neibolt Street,” feels like the moment the series steps directly into the heart of the IT universe. The story pushes deeper beneath the surface of Derry, pulling together the town’s past, its secrets, and the beginnings of the entity’s true identity.

This chapter immediately shifts the tension between Major Hanlon and General Francis Shaw. Hanlon has grown tired of the evasiveness, half-answers, and the way Shaw continues to operate with classified information he refuses to share. Their dynamic becomes sharper, more brittle, and more dangerous as Hanlon demands the truth about what the military is really pursuing in the Neibolt tunnels. Shaw remains guarded, frustrated that Hanlon keeps pushing, and the friction between them sets a tone that follows the entire episode.

Meanwhile, the episode brings back Maddy, portrayed by Miles Eckert, who has been missing since early in the season. His sudden return delivers the most direct exposition the audience has received. Maddie reveals that Phil is still alive, though the rest of the missing kids are gone, and he finally puts a name and shape to the evil beneath Derry. He tells the others that something monstrous lives underground and that it appears as a clown. It’s the moment the show officially acknowledges Pennywise as more than rumor or shadow, finally allowing the kids’ collective suspicions to solidify.

What drives much of the episode’s movement is Dick Halloran’s growing connection to the creature. Fresh from extracting critical information from Tanuel, Halloran becomes increasingly susceptible to the pull coming from below Derry. He is the one leading the excavation into the Neibolt well system, following a sensation that is part instinct and part supernatural compulsion. His storyline mirrors the town itself, steadily bending under the influence of something older and more powerful than anyone fully understands.

The Neibolt house, despite being one of the most iconic locations in the entire franchise, receives surprisingly little focus. Fans familiar with its history will likely feel the same disappointment we did: no major scene inside the house, no confrontation, no visual callback. Considering the house’s importance, its minimal use feels like the one missed opportunity in an otherwise layered episode.

The kids entering the sewer system at the same time as the military creates a strong sense of momentum. It’s the first time the show merges these storylines so directly, and the converging paths raise real questions about the extent of Pennywise’s abilities. The classic imagery of flashlights cutting through the tunnels evokes the familiar fear and childhood bravery that define the IT universe. Even without a direct encounter, the show captures the feeling of moving toward something impossible to fully comprehend.

Hank Grogan’s subplot also takes an interesting turn. What begins as a trip involving Shawshank teases new information about his personal life, hinting that Pennywise’s reach may extend further than the characters realize. It reinforces the idea that Derry’s darkness isn’t contained by distance or walls, but by something spiritual and territorial that stretches wherever it chooses.

“Neibolt Street” stands out as one of the season’s most engaging and grounded episodes. It blends childhood terror, military tension, and supernatural influence in a way that finally feels like classic IT. The lack of interaction inside the Neibolt house may linger as a disappointment, but the episode offers enough lore, nostalgia, and escalation to make it one of the most satisfying entries so far. HMU gives Welcome to Derry Episode Five an easy 4.5 out of 5 for the instant-reaction recap, noting it as the episode where the show finally embraces the full weight of the story it’s telling.

Rating: ★★★★½ (4.5/5)

A myth-heavy, nostalgia-driven, well-paced episode that finally unlocks the terror we came here for.
