Sony Pictures’ upcoming Resident Evil reboot from Zach Cregger (Weapons) is rounding out its cast. Zach Cherry (Severance), Kali Reis (True Detective: Night Country), and Johnno Wilson (Twisted Metal) have all joined the project, which begins filming mid-October in Prague.
They join Austin Abrams, who leads the feature after his breakout performance in Cregger’s Weapons earlier this year. Unlike past adaptations, Cregger’s vision is said to steer closer to the DNA of the Capcom games while introducing original characters, blending survival horror elements with new twists.
While plot specifics remain under wraps, early details tease mutated creatures, corporate conspiracies, and a mysterious package at the center of the story. Cherry is set to play a scientist working at a hospital, Reis will portray an ex-military character originally written for a male role, and Wilson’s character is being kept under wraps.
Cregger directs from a script he co-wrote with Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 3 and Chapter 4). Constantin Film is producing and co-financing, alongside Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon, PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan, and Constantin’s Robert Kulzer. Executive producers include Constantin’s Oliver Berben and Davis Films’ Victor Hadida.
The reboot is slated for theatrical release on September 18, 2026, via Sony Pictures and TriStar. Nicole Brown, president of TriStar Pictures, is overseeing the project for the studio.
With Cregger’s proven ability to weave social tension into genre storytelling, fans can expect Resident Evil to deliver both fresh characters and the nightmarish survival-horror spirit that defined the franchise.
