Just when it looked like the summer’s shark frenzy was beginning to fade, Above & Below is diving into theaters with another high-stakes battle for survival. The upcoming action-horror thriller from director Jesse V. Johnson blends deep-sea terror, cartel violence, and great white sharks into a pressure-cooker survival story that arrives in theaters on July 29.
Led by Antonio Banderas (The Mask of Zorro, Desperado) and Laura Marano (Austin & Ally, The Royal Treatment), Above & Below swaps the familiar “stranded at sea” formula for a deadly underwater mission where the greatest threat isn’t just what lurks beneath the surface.

Running dangerously low on oxygen and trapped between apex predators above and heavily armed criminals waiting on the surface, every second becomes a desperate fight for survival.
Rather than relying solely on aquatic horror, Above & Below appears to lean heavily into action-thriller territory, combining underwater suspense with cartel brutality.
