‘Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence’ Sets October PVOD Release

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence.
Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence brings the cult horror-comedy franchise back with a new generation of genetically engineered killer tomatoes.

The killer tomatoes are heading home this fall.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence, the fifth installment in the cult horror-comedy franchise, will arrive on premium video-on-demand platforms October 6 following its theatrical release, which began August 7.

The PVOD release comes through a new distribution partnership between Starboard Entertainment and Stonecutter Media. The companies plan to announce additional titles under the collaboration in the coming months.

Directed by David Ferino, Organic Intelligence continues a franchise that began with 1978’s Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. This time, the story introduces a young biotech prodigy whose genetically engineered vegetable is designed as a potential solution to some of humanity’s biggest problems. Instead, the experiment goes wrong and creates a new generation of killer tomatoes.

The film also brings back a familiar face from the franchise. John Astin reprises his role as Professor Gangreen, a character he previously played in multiple entries beginning with 1988’s Return of the Killer Tomatoes.

Astin is joined by David Koechner, Eric Roberts, Catherine Corcoran, Dan Bakkedahl, Myrna Velasco, Vernée Watson, Paul Bates, Zachary Roozen, Samantha Bailey and Noor Razooky.

Shot in Southern California, Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence was produced in association with Atomic Toybox Entertainment and continues the creation of original Attack of the Killer Tomatoes filmmakers Costa Dillon and Steve Peace.

For Stonecutter Media, the film also serves as the first announced project in its distribution partnership with Starboard Entertainment.

“Stonecutter Media is in the business of distributing and promoting edgy, over-the-top films, and Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence fits right in our wheelhouse,” Stonecutter Media owner and president Steven Karel said. He added that films targeting distinctive genre audiences have historically provided the company with a stronger sales position than more conventional releases.

Starboard founder Thomas Zambeck said the two companies had been looking for an opportunity to collaborate and saw Organic Intelligence as the appropriate project, pointing to the franchise’s established international audience and recognizable identity.

The original Attack of the Killer Tomatoes introduced audiences to the deliberately absurd premise of sentient tomatoes attacking humanity and eventually developed into a cult franchise spanning movies, television and other media.

Nearly five decades after that first film, Organic Intelligence brings the concept into the biotech era while retaining the horror-comedy foundation that has defined the series.

Attack of the Killer Tomatoes: Organic Intelligence will be available on PVOD beginning October 6.
