Beyond Fest 24' "Zero" - movie review

"Jean Luc Herbulot’s Zero delivers explosive action and relentless thrills in a race against time." (Beyond Fest)

In the stunning backdrop of Beyond Fest’s historic Los Angeles theaters, Zero, directed by Jean Luc Herbulot, takes us on an adrenaline-pumping ride that reminds us how fragile life can be. Known for his festival hit Saloum, Herbulot returns with another high-stakes thriller. This time, we meet a man (Hus Miller) who wakes up on a bus with a bomb strapped to his chest. Soon, he discovers he's not alone—another man (Cameron McHarg) shares his deadly predicament. Together, they must face impossible challenges while racing against time in a desperate countdown to zero.

Zero is a relentless and explosive thrill ride, and from the first scene, it grips you tight and never lets go. As the two leads navigate through treacherous encounters with strangers who could either aid their survival or cause their demise, we are treated to outstanding action sequences and pulse-pounding suspense.

Herbulot’s signature humor is also on display, balancing the intense moments with moments of levity that keep the film engaging. A perfect blend of action and humor defines this gripping narrative. Set during the Senegalese protests, the tension of the storyline is heightened by powerful performances and a tone that resonates with today's audience.

The dynamic between the two lead characters—one a mysterious businessman with secrets, the other a brute who fights first and asks questions later—turns Zero into an unexpected buddy comedy set against a high-octane thriller. Their banter and chemistry keep the film moving at breakneck speed. Their contrasting personalities and surprising teamwork give the film its heart and soul.

Visually, Zero is as stunning as we've come to expect from Herbulot. Sweeping drone shots and beautifully dangerous landscapes provide a breathtaking backdrop. Even though these visual elements are familiar to fans of Herbulot’s work, they continue to impress, giving Zero the visual power to match its relentless pacing.

While Zero may use the well-worn "bomb on the body" trope, it offers something fresh. One of the funniest thrillers of the year, it keeps the audience engaged with its exciting characters and fast-paced action. Herbulot has a gift for pulling viewers into his world, and with Zero, he has crafted a film that will appeal to a broad audience.

Explosive action, unforgettable characters, and a fast-paced, heart-pounding narrative make Zero one of the top action films of the year.
