European Microdrama Studio Black Forest Studios Heads to Cannes With Psychological Horror Series ‘Path Of The Lost’
Germany-based Black Forest Studios is heading to the Cannes Film Festival this week with its new psychological horror project Path Of The Lost while continuing its push to establish itself as a major European player in the rapidly growing microdrama market.
According to the studio, Path Of The Lost has officially completed production and combines psychological thriller elements with the pacing and accessibility associated with modern short-form entertainment formats.
The series follows five students traveling into Germany’s Black Forest for a weekend trip that slowly descends into psychological terror. Inspired by events reportedly connected to a 1936 case, the project blends horror, mystery, and suspense within a serialized short-form structure.
For horror audiences, the setting alone immediately taps into familiar genre territory.
The Black Forest region has long carried associations with folklore, disappearances, supernatural mythology, and gothic horror imagery, making it a natural backdrop for a psychological horror narrative built around isolation and paranoia.
Black Forest Studios previously gained attention earlier this year during discussions surrounding the expansion of international microdrama production companies. The studio has openly stated its ambitions to become a European equivalent to Crazy Maple Studios, the influential Chinese production company known for rapidly producing high-volume short-form scripted content.
Studio CEO Sebastian Weiland, who operates the company alongside writer Nina Gwyn Weiland, is currently attending Cannes to introduce the company’s production model to international buyers and distributors.
The company operates out of a facility featuring seven sound stages, approximately 3,000 square meters of studio space, post-production facilities, offices, and studio lot infrastructure.
“We see microdrama as one of the most exciting growth opportunities in the global entertainment landscape,” Sebastian Weiland said while discussing the studio’s direction. “With Black Forest Studios, we are building a fully integrated studio model from development and production to distribution of premium microdrama content.”
The company’s existing productions include microdrama series such as Black Forest Royale, Mountain Medical Klinik, and Dark Shades of the Outer Forest, all currently in production.
Additional projects in development include The Football Academy, Taurus, and Triple Trouble.
The rise of microdrama content has become increasingly visible across global entertainment markets, particularly in China, South Korea, and the United States, where short-form serialized storytelling continues expanding across streaming and mobile-first platforms.
With Path Of The Lost, Black Forest Studios appears positioned to bring that format further into the European horror and thriller space.
