BloodStream Goes ‘Back to Ghoul’ With an August Slate of School-Themed Horror
Summer is winding down, which means students everywhere are preparing for that dreadful annual tradition: going back to school.
Our streaming partners over at BloodStream are leaning directly into that feeling with Back to Ghoul, an August collection of horror films built around classrooms, campuses, teenagers, cheerleaders, murderous classmates, and all the other reasons school can become an absolute nightmare.
Curated by BloodStream programmer Heidi Honeycutt, Back to Ghoul takes the familiar back-to-school season and replaces fresh notebooks and new schedules with slashers, massacres, and plenty of bad decisions.
Personally, as the owner and creator of Horror Movies Uncut, I actually enjoyed going back to school. Judging by this lineup, I’m not entirely convinced Honeycutt shared that enthusiasm.
And horror fans are probably better off because of it.
The collection reaches across different eras and styles of genre cinema, including Dead Place, Saturnatalia, The Campus, After School Massacre, Massacre at Central High, Pieces, Satan’s School for Girls, Virgin Cheerleaders in Chains, Horny Teenagers Must Die and more.
That gives Back to Ghoul plenty of variety beyond simply stacking a playlist with traditional American high-school slashers. The programming stretches into different corners of school-age and campus horror, including films from outside the United States, while keeping that familiar academic nightmare running through the collection.
Of course, there are some recognizable cult titles in the mix.
Massacre at Central High remains a particularly nasty piece of ‘70s exploitation built around bullying, revenge, and the increasingly violent power struggle inside a high school. Pieces brings its infamous chainsaw-fueled campus carnage, while Satan’s School for Girls adds supernatural conspiracy to the curriculum.
Then you have titles like After School Massacre and Virgin Cheerleaders in Chains making sure nobody mistakes Back to Ghoul for wholesome end-of-summer viewing.
It is a fun concept for August, particularly for horror fans already starting the transition toward the Halloween season. Before we get completely buried under pumpkins, haunted houses, and October movie marathons, there is still time for one last round of summertime slashing.
So sharpen your pencils — and maybe your survival instincts.
Back to Ghoul is available throughout August on BloodStream, giving horror fans a full slate of school-themed nightmares to whet their slasher appetite as students everywhere reluctantly head back to class.
