A major tonal shift is coming to one of horror’s most recognizable franchises.
The upcoming Mummy reboot from Blumhouse Productions has officially been rated R, signaling a clear move away from the action-adventure tone that has defined the series for decades.
Directed by Lee Cronin, known for Evil Dead Rise, the film received its rating for strong disturbing violent content and gore—marking one of the most aggressive creative pivots the franchise has taken in its modern history.
While The Mummy has long existed as a hybrid of horror and blockbuster spectacle, most recent iterations leaned heavily into PG-13 territory, prioritizing large-scale adventure over outright terror. This new version appears to reverse that formula, placing horror at the forefront.
The project is part of a collaboration involving Blumhouse, Atomic Monster and New Line Cinema, further reinforcing expectations that the reboot will align more closely with contemporary genre filmmaking than franchise tradition.
Cronin’s involvement also points to a more grounded and visceral approach. His previous work demonstrated a willingness to lean into intensity and practical horror elements, suggesting that this Mummy could deliver a more stripped-down, unsettling experience.
If the tone holds, the reboot could mark the first time in years that the character returns to its roots as a creature-driven horror story rather than a spectacle-driven adventure.
