Estonia’s genre-blending cult sensation is headed to North America this fall
Dark Star Pictures and Red Water Entertainment have officially acquired the North American rights to one of the most jaw-dropping, blood-soaked, genre-smashing films in recent memory: Chainsaws Were Singing. This action-horror-musical-comedy hybrid from Estonia has been shredding its way through international festivals—and now it’s primed for a Fall 2025 theatrical release, followed by digital and on-demand platforms.
Described by stunned festival audiences as Monty Python meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets Les Misérables, Chainsaws Were Singing is a guerilla-shot, blood-splattered operatic fever dream. The plot? New lovers’ bliss is interrupted—by a chainsaw-wielding maniac, obviously. From there, the film catapults into a full-tilt odyssey of absurd grief, splatter gore, and musical mayhem.
“We’re always on the lookout for films that break the mold,” said Red Water Entertainment’s Avi Federgreen. “And Chainsaws Were Singing does that with a chainsaw and a show tune.”
The film comes stacked with accolades, including:
Best Horror Movie – Fantastic Fest 2024
Special Jury Mention, New Flesh Competition – Fantasia 2024
Best Film – Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre 2024
Official Selections at Sitges, Tallinn Black Nights, Night Visions, and more
“This is the kind of insane, fearless cinema that reminds you why we go to the movies,” added Michael Repsch, who negotiated the deal on behalf of Dark Star and Red Water. Justyna Koronkiewicz of Media Move represented the filmmakers.
Expect a full-throttle rollout this fall. Midnight audiences, genre freaks, and musical maniacs—you’ve been warned.
Dark Star Pictures and Red Water Entertainment have jointly acquired North American distribution rights to the wildly original genre mashup Chainsaws Were Singing, an over-the-top action-horror-musical-comedy from Estonia that’s been tearing through the international festival circuit. The two companies are partnering for a Fall 2025 theatrical release, followed by a digital and on-demand rollout.
A deliriously unhinged cinematic experience, Chainsaws Were Singing has been described as “Monty Python meets Texas Chainsaw Massacre meets Les Misérables.” The story follows new lovers whose budding romance is shredded apart—literally—by a chainsaw-wielding killer, setting off an anarchic odyssey full of gore, grief, and musical numbers. Shot guerilla-style, the film is a full-throttle love letter to B-movie chaos and crowd-pleasing exploitation cinema.
The film arrives with serious festival pedigree, having won Best Horror Movie at Fantastic Fest 2024, a Special Jury Mention in the New Flesh Competition for Best First Feature at Fantasia 2024, and Best Film at Buenos Aires Rojo Sangre 2024, along with official selections at Sitges, Tallinn Black Nights, Night Visions, and many more.
“We’re always on the lookout for films that break the mold, and Chainsaws Were Singing does that with a chainsaw and a show tune,” said Avi Federgreen, President of Red Water Entertainment. “It’s rare to find something this original that also connects so instantly with audiences.”
The acquisition deal was negotiated by Michael Repsch on behalf of Red Water and Dark Star, and Justyna Koronkiewicz of Media Move, representing the filmmakers.
“This is the kind of insane, fearless cinema that reminds you why we go to the movies,” said Repsch. “Chainsaws Were Singing is destined to become a midnight classic. We’re thrilled to unleash it on North American audiences together with Red Water Entertainment.”
