Hulu documentary Clown Panic explores the 2016 clown sightings.
Clown Panic examines how the bizarre 2016 clown sightings escalated from local reports into a nationwide media frenzy.

What began with reports of clowns lurking in the woods of a small South Carolina community eventually grew into a nationwide frenzy. A decade later, Hulu is returning to the strange events of 2016 with the new documentary Clown Panic.

The Hulu Original will premiere Monday, Oct. 12, as part of the streamer’s 2026 Huluween programming. The documentary will be available exclusively on Hulu in the U.S., through Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers and on Disney+ internationally.

Directed by Ed Perkins, Clown Panic examines the wave of reported clown sightings that spread across the United States in 2016, beginning with accounts from children who claimed they had encountered mysterious clowns hiding in wooded areas.

What initially sounded like an unusual local story quickly became considerably larger. Reports began appearing in communities around the country, schools went into lockdown, law enforcement agencies investigated sightings and social media helped push the phenomenon into the national conversation.

Rather than simply revisiting the stranger details of the scare, Clown Panic looks at how fear can spread when rumors, viral content and traditional media coverage begin feeding one another.

The documentary incorporates archival footage and viral videos from the period alongside interviews with witnesses, law enforcement officials, professional clowns and cultural commentators. Through those perspectives, the film explores how an increasingly bizarre urban legend developed into a broader moral panic.

The timing of the original phenomenon also provides the filmmakers with a larger cultural backdrop. Clown Panic examines the scare as a product of a period of significant anxiety in the United States, while looking at the growing influence social media had on how frightening or unverified stories could travel from one community to another.

The result is described as darkly funny, unsettling and unexpectedly emotional, with the documentary examining not only why people became afraid but how quickly collective fear could transform isolated reports into something resembling a national threat.

Perkins previously directed documentaries including The Princess and Tell Me Who I Am. Clown Panic is produced by Lightbox’s Jonathan Chinn and Simon Chinn, with Suzanne Lavery serving as executive producer.

The film joins Hulu’s expanding documentary catalog, which includes Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story, Friends Like These: The Murder of Skylar Neese, Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band, Devil in the Family: The Fall of Ruby Franke, Death in Apartment 603: What Happened to Ellen Greenberg? and Perfect Wife: The Mysterious Disappearance of Sherri Papini.

Clown Panic will also arrive in the middle of Hulu and Disney+’s larger Halloween programming push.

This year’s Huluween lineup includes the second season of Vampirina: Teenage Vampire, new series Coven Academy, FX’s American Horror Story: 13 and horror films including Soulm8te and Hokum. Disney+’s Halloween Collection will additionally feature seasonal films, series and specials, including returning titles such as Hocus Pocus and Edward Scissorhands.

For horror audiences, however, Clown Panic offers something slightly different: a look back at a real-world phenomenon that briefly made one of horror’s most recognizable figures feel considerably less fictional.

Clown Panic begins streaming Oct. 12 on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+ for bundle subscribers in the U.S. and on Disney+ internationally.
